馬友友（Yo-Yo Ma）是華裔美國大提琴家，生於巴黎，4歲起隨父親學琴，5歲就能公開演奏巴赫的大提琴組曲，8歲與小提琴家斯特恩同台演出，受到卡薩爾斯的讚賞。 1962年入紐約朱利亞德音樂學院和哈佛大學學音樂，成為倫納德·羅斯的得意門生，1978年獲埃德文·菲舍爾比賽大獎，從此開始活躍於演出舞台。馬友友（Yo-Yo Ma）的演奏追求細膩的表達與抒情，追求美妙的音質和自然、清新，他的琴聲往往是一種感情傾訴。

《三重協奏曲》是貝多芬運用小提琴、大提琴、鋼琴三件樂器的組合與交響樂隊相對置形式寫成的一首協奏曲。這首作品原本是為答謝他的經濟讚助人魯道夫公爵而作，於1803年開始動筆，但這位公爵的琴技卻實屬一般，所以貝多芬別出心裁地寫了這首奇特組合的《三重奏協奏曲》，其中鋼琴部分是最為簡單的，但小提琴與大提琴聲部的演奏正好相反，技巧艱深複雜。
在這首精彩絕倫的作品中，既有輝煌燦爛的皇者之風，又有觸及靈魂的深情對話，還有極富哲理性的蒼勁感，令人拍案叫絕。三種獨奏樂器在技術和深度上都閃耀著奪目的光彩，大提琴尤其出色。貝多芬把大提琴這種長期被忽視的樂器提高到了同鋼琴、小提琴平起平坐，平分秋色的地位，它不再是個配角，這無疑是貝多芬的獨創和功勞。在指揮的帶領下，管弦樂隊絕佳地豐富和推動著獨奏部分的發展，配合著獨奏樂器將音樂中的英雄氣概和豪情三倍地擴大，交響樂在此顯現出一種罕見的、震人心魄的力量。
第一樂章：快板，低音提琴以一種神秘的情調輕聲地吟誦出引子，接著全樂隊進入熱情豪邁主要主題，馬友友充滿激情的接過這支旋律，然後傳遞給了帕爾曼那華麗優雅的小提琴，接著是巴倫波英厚實有力鋼琴跟進，三位大師將旋律相互傳遞，如接力棒一般，各自對主要主題加以陳述，達到完美境界。三位獨奏家和樂隊運用高度的對位技巧，精心描述這些主題並變奏，每次高潮之後，樂隊就讓位於獨奏家們演奏那優美如歌的樂段，最後樂隊以飽滿的熱忱衝向第一樂章輝煌的結尾。

第三樂章：大提琴寧靜地引出再現的主題，其他兩位獨奏家依次接力。隨著樂隊的進程，推進著樂章向前發展。在主部主題經過變奏再次呈示之間，獨奏家們的三重奏在第二插入部以輝煌的室內樂風格清晰閃現。在輕快的、速度加倍的第二主題之後，獨奏三重奏在樂隊的和弦襯托下展開華彩。隨著華彩樂段最後極弱的顫奏逐步增強至消失，波羅乃茲主題回到原速，把協奏曲帶到其講究禮節般的典雅和凱旋般的結尾。
貝多芬的《三重協奏曲》鮮少有機會與《合唱幻想曲》在同一場音樂會中被演出，然而它們在貝多芬創世紀般的大師傑作領域裏，卻都有著不同定位、然而一樣舉足輕重的關鍵地位，將它們搭配著一起聆聽，足以讓人同時感受無法抗拒的心靈沉醉、以及神祕美好的生命啟發。從《三重協奏曲》到《合唱幻想曲》，充滿藝術奧妙讚嘆中的提昇經驗。自七○年代以來，貝多芬《三重協奏曲》的錄音版本，在卡拉揚/羅斯托波維奇/歐伊斯特拉夫/ 李希特的傳奇組合以來，一直難有足以匹敵的對手，此番EMI古典在長期策劃之後，終於以此錄音打開僵局，以小提琴之神帕爾曼、華裔大提琴超級巨星馬友友、再加上同時在指揮及鋼琴登於顛峰的巴倫波英，以及超級樂團柏林愛樂，重新奠定了此一曲目的新世代裏程碑。一九九五年二月柏林愛樂廳的現場，另一段傳奇曆史的起點，於此被見證。

Though they were long misunderstood as mere technical hurdles, Bach's six suites for unaccompanied cello are among those rare works of music that offer inexhaustible rewards for performer and listener alike. Yo-Yo Ma gave a pathbreaking account of the suites back in the '80s (Suites for Unaccompanied Cello ) but returns to them here impelled by a unique and interdisciplinary approach. For this project, Ma engaged the talents of artists in different fields--ranging from a landscape artist to a Kabuki actor and figure skaters--to produce six short films as a visual correlative for the highly distinctive character of each suite. While the success of the films in illuminating Bach's creativity is decidedly uneven, Ma brings the music itself to life with a searing, quasi-vocal eloquence. His interpretations are probing, characterized by imaginative bowing and attention to the spacious architecture of Bach's score. This is especially clear in Ma's preference for broad, expansive tempos and patient spinning of filigreed detail. True, the generally Romantic cast of his conception can seem overdone and exaggerated in statement, as if Ma is more intent on overlaying his own personality on the discipline of the music. But the prayerful, meditative concentration he brings to the Sarabandes--listen to the single-lined, anguished tone painting in Suite 5--is utterly convincing. There is a sense of profound introspection here, while in the Sarabande of Suite 6 Ma's phrasing suggests we are in the same spiritual terrain as Beethoven's late quartets. Yet there is no lack of blistering energy and extroverted high spirits in some of the more overtly dance-oriented movements. While purists may complain of distortion in these accounts, Ma once again proves he has something vital to say with this music.

Yo-Yo Ma might seem like an unlikely protagonist for the tango, but this intrepid musical explorer has taken his task seriously, collaborating with experienced tango musicians. Ma even participates in a posthumous collaboration with one 1987 Piazzolla recording. Furthermore, while he's obviously the headliner here, he doesn't dominate the arrangements nearly as much as he does the billing and photography of the disc. While the result isn't your essential Piazzolla album (that would have to include more of the composer's own playing), it's an atmospheric and convincing collection, perhaps a good introduction for those who don't know the music.

這張名為《CLASSIC YO-YO》的唱片中，除了有馬友友的精彩炫技縱橫全碟，更有他與當今樂壇首屈一指的音樂家的聯袂演出。例如已故小提琴巨匠斯特恩、小提琴大師帕爾曼、電影音樂天皇約翰-威廉斯等，絕佳的默契搭配，讓整張唱片的音樂可聽性幾乎無懈可擊。
除此之外，這張唱片更收錄3首從未發行過的全新作品：與小提琴民謠歌手艾莉森-克勞斯再度合作的“Simple Gifts”、探戈大師皮埃爾佐拉的名曲“Fear Tango”以及約翰-威廉斯的新作“American Collection Theme”(Extended Version)。“新曲＋精選”的完美組合，使整張唱片更具新意，曲風也呈現出絕無僅有的多元化，完全超越古典的限製，恣意揮灑出無限可能的音樂創意。
這張唱片中的曲目雖然大多數取自已以不同的專輯，但由於SONY工程師後期混音技藝精湛，16段錄音竟然無一不呈現出乾淨細膩的音質、飽滿豐潤的平衡度，以及迷人鮮活的現場空間感，給人以渾然一體之感。
非常值得一提的是，發燒友可以透過此碟領略到馬友友所使用的兩把名貴大提琴奇美絕倫的音色。這兩把一直陪伴在馬友友身邊的名琴，一把是出產於1733年威尼斯的“蒙塔那那”(Montagnana)；另一把是1712年由意大利克萊莫納製琴大師斯特拉迪瓦裏製作的“大衛多夫”(Davidoff)。後者曾經為英國傳奇女大提琴家杜普蕾所擁有，音色蒼勁透明，琴腔共鳴之美妙，所彌漫出的“木頭味”之濃烈，實在令人難以抵擋。據悉馬友友為配合其專輯《繁花似錦巴洛克》中的古樂錄音，還特別邀請英國著名古樂器製造家將這把“大衛多夫”名琴改回巴洛克時期慣用的琴型。琴弦間距拉大；琴碼變厚；四弦拉在一個平麵上；琴弦改成羊腸弦；弓改成大弧度的古弓；最特別的是將琴身下的支柱拆除，懸空以雙腳夾住演奏，完全符合巴洛克時期的演奏特色。

為了忠實呈現韋瓦第時代音樂的原貌，馬友友找到了製琴大師史特拉第瓦裏在1712年於義大利所打造的三百年名琴，並且采用古人使用的羊腸弦、彎弓，以及沒有修成圓弧形的琴橋，同時他也揚棄了現代大提琴慣常使用的腳架，僅以雙腿夾住琴身，忠實的拉奏出韋瓦第時代的大提琴聲音。暗沉、柔弱而細膩的大提琴音色，搭配起湯庫普曼的古樂團采用的古樂風格，就形成了這張華麗而動聽的韋瓦第演奏專輯。在專輯中，馬友友選用了三首原本就是為大提琴所譜寫的作品，開頭的第一首，甚至還是為兩把大提琴所寫的「G小調雙大提琴協奏曲」，他還特別邀請了另外一位大提琴好手強納森曼森（Jonathan Manson），演出幾乎天衣無縫的精彩合奏。 「四季」協奏曲裏麵「冬季」第二樂章的「最緩板」改成以大提琴表現之後，雖然以稍快一點的速度演奏，仍然相當精致。接著，「降B大調大提琴、弦樂與低音大提琴協奏曲」雖然由於大提琴先天上比不過小提琴的清澈、亮麗，但是在馬友友和搭配樂手們高超的技巧之下，仍然忠實的呈現了韋瓦第的創意，而未曾顯得含混不清。
除了幾首原本就是為了大提琴而譜寫的作品，馬友友和庫普曼似乎有點刻意的避開了韋瓦第其餘的大提琴曲目。我們可以聽到為柔音中提琴與魯特琴所寫的協奏曲，被改編為大提琴與管風琴的協奏曲。由於大提琴的音域與中提琴比較接近，表現起來更是得心應手。庫普曼不但擔任指揮，還親自負責管風琴與大鍵琴的演奏，多次與馬友友的合作，彼此培養出絕佳的默契，演出的效果令人稱道。另外，他們還挑選了幾首韋瓦第的歌劇作品，其中包括了來自很少被拿來演出的田園歌劇「忠實的水精靈」裏麵的一首四重唱歌曲「COSI SUGL' OCCHI MIEI」。來自歌劇「朱斯迪諾」的「生命之榮耀」詠歎調，被改編為大提琴與兩把雙簧管的協奏曲。在韋瓦第所留下的清唱劇裏麵，唯一碩果僅存的「凱旋的朱笛特」，可說是他畢生表現人類歌聲最傑出的作品之一，馬友友挑選了其中唯美的的「Quanto Magis Generosa 」和快活的「Noli, o Cara, te Adorantis」，同樣做出了精彩的表現。
這是一張難以用言語來形容的精致專輯，每一首樂曲都是那麽的迷人，完全的發揮了巴洛克音樂的魅力。假如一定要我從中挑選一首「最愛」，或許就是選自「榮耀頌」的歌曲「Laudamus Te」了，它有著令人驚奇的好效果，仿佛它原本就是為大提琴而寫的作品一樣，渾然天成，令人難以置信。千萬不要以為自己對古典音樂缺乏素養就忽略了這張專輯，它的親和力絕對會讓你感到意外。馬友友能夠獲得舉世樂迷的熱愛，憑借的絕對不僅僅是笑容可掬的可愛模樣！
