隋朝文帝年間，虯髯客張三郎﹝梁朝偉﹞英明勇武，濟世扶危，世仇劉雄時欲加害，均被虯一一破解。文帝愛妾宣華夫人﹝陳秀珠﹞乃其紅顏知己，而虯之豪邁不凡 更先後為蘭陵公主﹝陳玉蓮﹞、李湘兒﹝鄭豔鳳﹞及長孫無垢﹝曾華倩﹞所愛慕，從而展開一段難分難解的情緣。虯素有大誌，機緣巧合下，相繼認識李靖﹝歐瑞偉 ﹞、紅拂女﹝王綺琴﹞、李世民﹝劉青雲﹞及李密﹝黃日華﹞等一班豪傑。時值楊廣﹝吳啟華﹞陰謀奪位，殘害忠良，並施行暴政，虯等群雄乘時而起，拯救萬民， 但竟有人包藏禍心，因利忘義，由是產生連串驚心動魄的故事。
