2009 GDP Ranking by the CIA World Factbook



If Taiwan were to be considered part of the People's Republic of China in this list, China's GDP would surpass that of Japan for second place.

GDP can be misleading as a measure of wealth and living standard. Since GDP accounts for the net wealth of the entire country, and not each individual's average wealth, it tends to be biased toward countries with high populations, such as India; very wealthy countries like Luxembourg can have comparatively low GDPs on account of their low populations.

A more revealing measure is GDP per capita, which is basically GDP divided by the country's population. That allows for a more accurate picture of living conditions in that country. For example, Luxembourg rises to the top of lists of countries by GDP per capita. Please see the link for the list:
