This is a list of the British forces that served in Korea. As usual, information is hard to come by. It is NOT our intention to ignore any unit which served. We wish to get the facts correct and produce a accurate list of all the units who served.
Due to time pressures and a lack of staff, we can no longer update these pages. This may change in the future, please bear with us.

C Squadron, 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars, Lt Col William Lother(BART) docking in Pusan 14 Nov 1950 went to north of Pyangyang we retreating to re group in early 1951 our recce troop lost 23 men the area was Kompo Vally a tank was captured (Cromwell tank) the 8th helped the Glosters capture hill 327 it was the only time British tanks opend fire on each other to shoot the chinese of each others tanks.

The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders received the South Korean Presidential Citation for holding 'a critical sector of the Naktong River during the height of the enemy's attack, and for its participation in the general offensive of 16 September'.

120th Light Battery, Oct 1951-Dec 1952. joined 61st Light Field Regiment). 120 Mortar Bty was on the Hook and in support of Hill 355 at times. 61 Light Regiment was the longest serving unit in the Korean War, continuing to support infantry unit replacements, such as the 2nd US Marines when other units went out of the line for rest and recuperation. Corps of Royal Engineers
No 1 Movement Control Staff RE The advance party of No 1 Movement Control Staff RE consisting of 1 Offr, 2 x Sgts and 2 x OR's landed at Ashiya, Japan on 14 Oct 1950. The second lift with Major S J Cornfoot MBE RE DAQM(Q), who was to command No1 MCS, arrived with one other Officer on 15 Oct 1950. This was followed by the 3rd and 4th lifts. Immediately Q(Movements) organization was set up with Rear HQ BCFK at KURE, and a detachment was positioned at PUSAN. DAQMG(M) proceeded with Main HQ BCFK to TAEGU and was seconded to organize Adv HQ BCFK at HQ 2nd Logistical Command USA. And Embarkation Staff Officer was established at the port of PUSAN and an Railway Transport Officer at PUSAN Railway Station.
On the 13 Dec 51 Lt Col S J Cornfoot MBE RE handed over command of Movement Control to Lt Col G Combes RAI. On the 15 Dec 51 No 1 Movement Control Staff RE and No 2 Canadian Movement Control Group and BCOF Movement Control Section were integrated to form British Commonwealth Movement Control group (KOREA).

Royal Army Education Corps As an NS RAEC sergeant I sailed to Korea in June 1955 with the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders and spent approx. 1 year working as a sub-editor on the field newspaper "Crown News". The CN paper was being produced in Korea throughout the war and RAEC personnel were involved in this activity for the period from 1950 to 1956 to my knowledge. Thanks to Mike Gardner for this entry.

Intelligence School No 9 The commanding officer was Lt Col De Cent RA, the adjutant was Capt Butler RA, the operations officer was Major Anderson RUR. the unit was forming early 53, I spent one year there, based in a girls school just outside Seoul, it contained all three services Navy, Army and AirForce, one of the many jobs was debriefing the pow returning in 53, before the end of the war we trained officers and senior nco's in escape and evasion, the unit was still operational when I left in 54. Military Provost Staff Corps MPSC Operated a Field Punishment Centres and Military Corrective Establishments at Pusan and Kure. These were joint establishments with other Commonwealth forces and provided custodial facilities for the Commonwealth Units in Korea.
Royal Military Police 29th Independant Brigade 1950-1951. Re-called from the army reserve after 7 years service in 1950. Posted to Colchester where the 29th Ind. Infantry Brigade Provost Company was formed. Posted to Korea and served until the end of 1951. As far as memory goes the CO was Major Greenwood, 2 IC Captain Williams. Britcom base ammunition depot This RAOC depot was at Song Jong on the coast near Heundae. The C.O. was Major McCulloch, the depot closed in 1954. Other officers were Major Lynch, Lt Eric Gell.

625 FWD RAOC, I was cpl gray k reme the unit fitter at 625FWD RAOC which was based in Pusan. I recollect we were a returned surplus goods unit mainly linked with the ammo dump outsidg of town near Zongzong R & R camp.
The Corps of Royal Electrical And Mechanical Engineers
5 medium Workshop, REME In 1950 I was the Adjutant at 3 Central workshop Bordon in Hanpshire. When the korean war started in June 50 I was posted at 24 hrs notice to 27 Command workshop REME at Sutton Veney in Wiltshire. This was in july or there abouts. On arrival I was told I was in fact joining a new unit to be formed ...5 Medium workshop. 5 medium workshop was formed over the next few hectic weeks with a small number of regular oficers and NCO and then over two hundred reservists. The officers were.. Major Desmond Gadsby ( OC ). Myself as Admin Oficer. Capt Jack Watson. Captain Dennis, Captain "Chuck " Hesketh, Lt Ian Brandon.
Having formed up the unit sailed from southampton in September on the Empire Fowey and arrived PUSAN 4th November 1950. The second ship from UK.
The main contingent on the Fowey was the 8th Hussars. 5 medium moved to a school in Taegu. It's vehicles and equipment arrived soon after. One Staff sgt was killed in the workshop within a few days and Capt Hesketh ( the only reserve officer ) was also killed and is buried in Yokohama.
When our equipment arrived in 1950 we formed a large LAD which I took North to catch up with the Brigade and render assisitance as possible. Near Suwon in early 51 I joined up with the main unts of 29bde and met a unit 29 Independant Infantry brigade Group Support Troops Lad. Commanded as an independant unit by Capt Gordon Ewing. ( retired as Colonel and now deceased. ) When the Chinese counterattacked in 51 5 medium was withdrawn to Pusan and then evacuated to Kure In Japan where they set up and did great work supporting the force in Korea. I did not go to Japan but joined 10 Infantry workshop REME which was commanded by Major JC Smith. Captain Ewing also joined 10 Inf at this time. Major smith was relieved by Major Rogers. Other officers in 10 Inf at that time were Captain " Dixie " Dean, and lt Tony Cribb the Tels oficer. Major Gadsby became very ill soon after our arrival in Taegu and was casevacted to Uk. I cannot be too sure but I believe a new OC arrived from Uk in time to take 5 Med to Kure and his name I regret I cannot recall. later in 51 I moved to 29Bde HQ were Captain Vic snow was the BEME. I took over the Bde lad at the HQ until leaving for Uk in April 52. I have written an account of my time in Korea and this was published in two isues of the REME corps magazine. I think your references to Captain Keech must be after our time there as I know he was not in 29 Bde during my time. Or possibly he was with 27bde. The two brigades did not serve near each other so I would not know.
23rd Heavy Recovery Section (29 Brigade), R.E.M.E. Based at both Inchon and Seol. I believe i/c was Captain Snow in charge of approx 50 men. This unit arrived in Pusan from Liverpool aboard The Empress of Australia, this being the flag ship from U.K. and the first to arrive from U.K. Thanks to Alexander J.Ferguson for this entry.

Relocated HQ in Kure Japan in 1951 while Advanced 4 Ordnance Dept located to Pusan. I served from Nov50 to Mar52 when I returned to UK. 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment
2nd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment 2RAR left Sydney March 5, 1953, and arrived in Korea at Pusan March 17, taking over from 1 RAR. Commanding Officer at the time was Lt. Col. G.F Larkin, who assumed that role in September 1952 and subsequently commanded the Battalion until August 1954. The Battalion remained for the rest of the duration of the war, and finally returned to Australia on April 17, 1954. Of the action that 2 RAR saw was the Battle of the Hook 24-26 July 1953 (just before the armistice was declared), for which they won the Battle Honour of 'Samichon'.

No 1 Movement Control Staff RE The advance party of No 1 Movement Control Staff RE consisting of 1 Offr, 2 x Sgts and 2 x OR's landed at Ashiya, Japan on 14 Oct 1950. The second lift with Major S J Cornfoot MBE RE DAQM(Q), who was to command No1 MCS, arrived with one other Officer on 15 Oct 1950. This was followed by the 3rd and 4th lifts. Immediately Q(Movements) organization was set up with Rear HQ BCFK at KURE, and a detachment was positioned at PUSAN. DAQMG(M) proceeded with Main HQ BCFK to TAEGU and was seconded to organize Adv HQ BCFK at HQ 2nd Logistical Command USA. And Embarkation Staff Officer was established at the port of PUSAN and an Railway Transport Officer at PUSAN Railway Station.
On the 13 Dec 51 Lt Col S J Cornfoot MBE RE handed over command of Movement Control to Lt Col G Combes RAI. On the 15 Dec 51 No 1 Movement Control Staff RE and No 2 Canadian Movement Control Group and BCOF Movement Control Section were integrated to form British Commonwealth Movement Control group (KOREA).

Royal Army Education Corps As an NS RAEC sergeant I sailed to Korea in June 1955 with the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders and spent approx. 1 year working as a sub-editor on the field newspaper "Crown News". Intelligence School No 9 The commanding officer was Lt Col De Cent RA, the adjutant was Capt Butler RA, the operations officer was Major Anderson RUR. the unit was forming early 53, I spent one year there, based in a girls school just outside Seoul, it contained all three services Navy, Army and AirForce, one of the many jobs was debriefing the pow returning in 53, before the end of the war we trained officers and senior nco's in escape and evasion, the unit was still operational when I left in 54. 5 medium Workshop, REME In 1950 I was the Adjutant at 3 Central workshop Bordon in Hanpshire. When the korean war started in June 50 I was posted at 24 hrs notice to 27 Command workshop REME at Sutton Veney in Wiltshire. This was in july or there abouts. On arrival I was told I was in fact joining a new unit to be formed ...5 Medium workshop. 5 medium workshop was formed over the next few hectic weeks with a small number of regular oficers and NCO and then over two hundred reservists. The officers were.. Major Desmond Gadsby ( OC ). Myself as Admin Oficer. Capt Jack Watson. Captain Dennis, Captain "Chuck " Hesketh, Lt Ian Brandon.
Having formed up the unit sailed from southampton in September on the Empire Fowey and arrived PUSAN 4th November 1950. The second ship from UK.
The main contingent on the Fowey was the 8th Hussars. 5 medium moved to a school in Taegu. It's vehicles and equipment arrived soon after. One Staff sgt was killed in the workshop within a few days and Capt Hesketh ( the only reserve officer ) was also killed and is buried in Yokohama.
When our equipment arrived in 1950 we formed a large LAD which I took North to catch up with the Brigade and render assisitance as possible. Near Suwon in early 51 I joined up with the main unts of 29bde and met a unit 29 Independant Infantry brigade Group Support Troops Lad. Commanded as an independant unit by Capt Gordon Ewing. ( retired as Colonel and now deceased. ) When the Chinese counterattacked in 51 5 medium was withdrawn to Pusan and then evacuated to Kure In Japan where they set up and did great work supporting the force in Korea. I did not go to Japan but joined 10 Infantry workshop REME which was commanded by Major JC Smith. Captain Ewing also joined 10 Inf at this time. Major smith was relieved by Major Rogers. Other officers in 10 Inf at that time were Captain " Dixie " Dean, and lt Tony Cribb the Tels oficer. Major Gadsby became very ill soon after our arrival in Taegu and was casevacted to Uk. I cannot be too sure but I believe a new OC arrived from Uk in time to take 5 Med to Kure and his name I regret I cannot recall. later in 51 I moved to 29Bde HQ were Captain Vic snow was the BEME. I took over the Bde lad at the HQ until leaving for Uk in April 52. I have written an account of my time in Korea and this was published in two isues of the REME corps magazine. I think your references to Captain Keech must be after our time there as I know he was not in 29 Bde during my time. Or possibly he was with 27bde. The two brigades did not serve near each other so I would not know.
23rd Heavy Recovery Section (29 Brigade), R.E.M.E. Based at both Inchon and Seol. I believe i/c was Captain Snow in charge of approx 50 men. This unit arrived in Pusan from Liverpool aboard The Empress of Australia, this being the flag ship from U.K. and the first to arrive from U.K. Thanks to Alexander J.Ferguson for this entry.

1st commonwealth counter bombardment troop r.a troop was formed in 1951. at stanley barracks hong kong, all volunteers under the command of major evan vaughan thomas r.aofficers were capt .potts, lt reynolds, lt murphy o'connor,, sgt winstone was the senior n.c.o we were based at fort george, near the imjin river, we had 5 observation posts, plus unit attached to an american radar unit our main duties was spotting the activity of enemiy gun positions, our outposts werein front of the forward infantry units in the british sector and were regullary under fire from incoming mortar attack, ..... i served as driver wireless operator for major thomas from dec,1951 until nov, 1952.

1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment
2nd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment 2RAR left Sydney March 5, 1953, and arrived in Korea at Pusan March 17, taking over from 1 RAR. Commanding Officer at the time was Lt. Col. G.F Larkin, who assumed that role in September 1952 and subsequently commanded the Battalion until August 1954. The Battalion remained for the rest of the duration of the war, and finally returned to Australia on April 17, 1954. Of the action that 2 RAR saw was the Battle of the Hook 24-26 July 1953 (just before the armistice was declared), for which they won the Battle Honour of 'Samichon'.
