與君一席話（4）

好久不寫這個題目，忙，顧不上說除了衣食住行以外的話。或者聊過什麽我也忘了，或者我沒有了情致，怕自己廢話太多人嫌囉嗦，但我們並不冷漠，特別是對生活和人。

這個題目多是自我咿語，和他聊天時的一些隻言片語對我的啟發，記下來，於己有益，並不礙他人事。我們都是些有點兒怪癖的冷清之徒，這些思想的交流是我們之間最令人愉快的事情。當然也有話不投機的時候，當另起一個題目。：））比如叫：話不投機半句多什麽的。

這些日子我的心情被那無辜而死的兩個幼兒糾纏著，話題自然就去了那裏。

我問他我為什麽會感到出離的憤怒和受傷？平時自己並不特別關心遙遠的東方怎麽崛起，或者怎麽墮落的事情，但這件事情上我對人間彌漫的冷漠感到震撼，悲憤，糾結得很，就是隔著大洋也沒有距離感。

他看著我說：你還記得海明威‘喪鍾為誰而鳴’嗎？那是他引用英國玄學派詩人約翰 .多恩的一句詩。

 “沒有哪個人是一座孤島，自身就已完整；每個人都是構成大陸的一塊，是汪洋的一部分；任何人的死亡都會將我消減，因為我是人類的一員。因此，不必差人去打聽喪鍾為誰而鳴；它，為你而鳴。”

我找來英國詩人約翰·多恩的這段詩的原文：

　　No Man is an Island

　　No man is an island, entire of itself;

　　every man is a piece of the continent,

　　a part of the main;

　　if a clod be washed away by the sea,

　　Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were,

Meaning

Human beings do not thrive when isolated from others. Donne was a Christian but this concept is shared by other religions, principally Buddhism.
Origin
This is a quotation from John Donne (1572-1631). It appears in Devotions upon emergent occasions and seuerall steps in my sicknes - Meditation XVII, 1624:

"All mankind is of one author, and is one volume; when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better language; and every chapter must be so translated...As therefore the bell that rings to a sermon, calls not upon the preacher only, but upon the congregation to come: so this bell calls us all: but how much more me, who am brought so near the door by this sickness....No man is an island, entire of itself...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."
