喬治·弗裏德裏希·亨德爾（George Friedrich Handel，1685-1759）和巴赫都是音樂史上巴洛克時期的集大成者。亨德爾在德國出生，27歲時（1712年）到英國定居，成為一名英籍德國作曲家。他的作品多產而全麵，僅清唱劇就作有27部之多，其中最著名，最優秀的當屬《彌賽亞》。
《彌賽亞》是亨德爾移居英國多年後創作的，歌詞用英語。“彌賽亞”一詞在希伯來語中原意是“受膏者”，指上帝所選中的人。這部清唱劇的標題就是指耶穌基督（中文也有簡單翻譯成“救世主”的）。清唱劇的腳本（歌詞）由查爾斯 詹恩斯（Charles Jennens）撰寫，主要根據《聖經》英文版等材料中有關基督的內容，包括基督的誕生，受難，複活等，但不重情節，多有感歎和讚頌。
結構有三大部分，共53段組成：
第一部分：主要講基督的誕生（21段）
第二部分：主要講基督的受難（23段）
第三部分：主要講基督的複活（9段）
全曲用時約兩個半小時左右。全部歌詞見本文後的附錄。
全曲包括合唱，不同聲部的獨唱，重唱，以及少數獨立的器樂部分。在樂隊方麵使用樂器的種類和數量，從原譜到數次實際演出是有所變動和增加的。下麵是1754年亨德爾在倫敦最後一次指揮《彌賽亞》時的樂隊編製：15把小提琴， 5把中提琴， 3把大提琴，兩把低音提琴，4支雙簧管，4支大管，兩支小號，兩支圓號，一組定音鼓；合唱團由四個聲部19人組成。後來莫紮特等作曲家曾先後為《彌賽亞》修訂並擴大樂隊配器。
《彌撒亞》是亨德爾最傑出的作品之一，據說是全世界演出最多的清唱劇。

下麵是第二部分的終曲合唱“哈利路亞” （Hallelujah），這是整部作品中最著名的唱段。“哈利路亞” 一詞源自希伯來語，意為“（讓我們）讚美耶和華”或“讚美主”，後成為基督教的常用禱文之一。據說《彌賽亞》1943年在倫敦公演時，當進行到這首“哈裏路亞”時，觀演的英王喬治二世肅然起立，於是全場觀眾也隨之起立。據說此後形成了一個慣例，即演出到這首合唱時，觀眾起立（但這也不絕對，如本文最後那個現代樂隊表演的全曲音像，唱到這首歌的時候，可以看到有的觀眾並沒有起立，台上的四位獨唱者也沒有起立）。下麵這段音像由英國皇家合唱協會（Royal Choral Society）和皇家愛樂樂團（Royal Philharmonic Orchestra）於2012年演出，用現代樂隊。
