卓別林的第一部長片（片長六卷），在風格上放棄一些過分誇張的鬧劇動作，開始加入笑中有淚的人情味於完整的故事中，拍成一部相當感人的悲喜劇作品。故事描述一名窮苦的倫敦女人把私生子丟棄在有錢人住宅門口的汽車上。然而汽車被竊，嬰孩被扔在垃圾箱旁。玻璃匠夏爾洛經過，把嬰孩撿了回家撫養。孩子長大到四、五歲時，夏爾洛帶他出去幹活。孩子先拿石頭擲破人家的窗戶，夏爾洛就上前換玻璃，爺兒倆其樂無窮。後來，國家的慈善機構要把小孩送進育幼院，夏爾洛感到一陣迷惘。他決定要把孩子奪回，乃翻過屋頂，追趕上飛跑的卡車，終於把小孩再次抱入懷中。夏爾洛不能回到他居住的頂樓，乃帶著小孩到夜店投宿。此時，小孩的母親已經有了錢，懸賞找回她的孩子。有人為錢把小孩從夏爾洛身邊偷偷取走送回給母親。夏爾洛在夢中來到了陋巷天堂，在那裏有爭吵也有歡笑。夏爾洛一覺醒來，發現母親與小孩站在他的身邊。他終於找到了幸福。五歲的天才童星賈克柯根扮演小孩，有十分可愛動人的表現。他跟卓別林之間流露出來的父子情，深深打動了觀眾。卓別林也充分掌握了玻璃匠夏爾洛的細致感情層麵，在逗笑之餘也嚴肅地塑造了一個卑微卻充滿愛心的慈父形象。整個故事拍得十分流暢自然，在上映後轟動了英、美、法等國，把卓別林的聲譽帶上了一個新的高峰。
