1913年，在一個荒涼的小島上，西西裏當地居民過著平靜安逸的生活，一代代人在這片土地辛勤勞動、繁衍生息。而這一切都被一個突然到來的美國人打破了。這位鑲著金牙的美國人到處遊說著西西裏的人們，說外麵的世界是那麽的繁華，在那裏，人們是生活在天堂裏，到處都是黃金，人人都是富翁。外麵的世界的土豆有火車車廂那麽大，胡蘿卜像船那麽長，樹上結的都是金幣，像樹葉一樣大批的飄落下來。不僅如此，這個 “外來客”還拿出照片向這裏人們證明他荒謬的話，還說他現在的任務就是陪伴那些離開了西西裏，已經在繁華的世界中享受生活的人們。曼庫索家族（西西裏的居民之一）中的一位成員已經離開西西裏到繁華世界去了，全家都在等他的消息，而這位美國人帶來了他的消息。為了成為繁華新世界的公民，西西裏的人們必須放棄現有的生活狀態才能獲得重生。他們要放棄自己的信念信仰，放棄這片家園，要把自身訓練得強壯，要學會服從，隻有成功地從“原始人”變為“現代人”，這樣，才能穿越通往繁華新世界的金色大門。必須經過幾周時間在海洋中艱苦的穿行，才能到達“眼淚島”和“愛麗絲島”——對他們進行最終考驗的地方。新世界的守門人負責對他們進行逐項考驗，他們的身心都要達“現在人”的要求。在這個通向天堂，但卻像地獄的地方，許多家庭都要進行選擇，並不是每個人都能進入這個大門，而有些人，卻是命運注定要通過黃金大門……
本片獲得第63屆威尼斯影展「新發現銀獅獎」等共六座獎項，到底世界上有沒有可以通往人間天堂的「金色大門」？
