家庭的力量

在離開筆者住處不遠的地方，住著這樣一戶人家，男主人叫John Crowley. 1998年，John 在 Bristol-Myers Squibb Cogong公司做marketing工作。這一年，對John來說是很不幸的一年。他的兩個孩子，Megan和Patrick被診斷為一種叫做Pompe disease, a rare, life threatening disorder. Megan出生後僅一個星期就確診，Patrick是四個月後被確診。

2000年的三月，John做了個很大的決定，“It was right after the two year anniversary of the kids being diagnosed, and we were just frustrated with the pace of research and wanted to do someting" , John，辭去了工作。“I guess it was all th eemotions that you go through in a situation like that. It's not supposed to happen to you or your kids". John 決定要自己為孩子做些什麽。他覺得自己沒有太多的luxury時間。

當時，針對這個病，沒有任何Food and Drug Administration 批準的治療辦法。

John成立了自己的一家公司：Novazyme Pharmaceuticals,從事這方麵的研究。

一年，僅僅一年，公司的endowment達到了$27M。John把公司賣給了一家大許多的公司：Genzyme Therapentics, 並開始在Genzyme工作。

2003年，公司已經有了clinical trials的藥。可惜，帶著有些諷刺意義的是，醫院拒絕了在John的孩子上進行治療，因為這會“conflict of interest".

這年的聖誕夜，John收到了一個讓全家興奮的聖誕卡，一家醫院，最後同意給他的孩子進行治療。

經過治療，雖然兩個孩子沒有根除疾病，但病情已經被控製住了。尤其是心髒恢複了健康。兩個孩子也進入公學校和其他同一起上課。

John本人現在為Amicus Therapeutics的president and CEO, 聖比得醫院的board of directors.

John的故事被編成了書，也上了電影。電影名字叫"Extraordinary Measures",由Harrison Ford主演。

總結自己的努力，John認為，一切來源於"the power of family".

"I think the first thing to realize is that in any health crisis for any family member, for children in particular, is that nobody's going to be better advocate for them than their parents".
