紅豆紅 回複 悄悄話 The meaning behind Standing Up-

The meaning behind Standing Up---by Fiona Joy Fiona Joy Hawkins

I was told by someone in Australia (involved in my earlier albums) that I wasn't good enough to play the piano, record or write Blue Dream and that I would blow my chances if I even attempted Blue Dream with such esteemed people as those at Imaginary Road. He said they would laugh at me and my career would be over. Not only did that hurt, but it made me want to prove that it was wrong. It was not only my life's dream to be a composer, but to record with Will Ackerman was going to be the realisation of another dream.

It's one of life's ironies that responses to hurtful comments from others often leads to finding one's voice.

That's what happened with Standing Up. In the beginning, I felt the need to prove something. Then the music took over, guiding me in the composition of Blue Dream. Suddenly, it was no longer about credibility. It was about creating, about transcribing the music in my head into sweetly blended notes emanating from piano and cello, beautiful vocals and strings. About the bliss I felt while working on it and the utter joy of collaboration.

Now, two years later, Blue Dream is on the ballot for five Grammys, and it continues to bring me a sense of fulfillment. And if credibility were still an issue, it has elicited comments such as the one below by Will Ackerman and the messages I get en masse from people around the world who love the music. Standing Up comes from sitting down with yourself and believing you can achieve anything if you want it enough. I'm not seeking credibility any longer though having Standing Up in the final round at the Grammy Awards for Best Instrumental Composition would be quite a recognition and one I would be so proud of.

"Fiona Joy Hawkins "BLUE DREAM" began as the most ambitious project of my entire career and resulted in one of the most remarkable collaborations this genre has ever known. The scope of what we contemplated in the beginning was so vast as to be nearly paralyzing, but with Fiona's talent, both as a composer and player, and a group of musicians of world-class caliber, a 67:50 suite of music resulted."

"The music itself spans a broad range of styles and ethnicities and yet (though we didn't know whether we'd succeed until the very end) is magically cohesive. It works! Never has faith been more rewarded. Blue Dream is unique and I am as proud of it (and Fiona) as anything I ever worked on in my 35 year career of Grammy Awards and gold and platinum records."
