Scarborough Fair

Scarborough最早在大約一千年前由Viking(維京)人在英格蘭的西北部North Yorkshire
登陸後逐漸成為一個重要的港口。中世紀時期，Scarborough是來自全英格蘭甚至還有
歐洲的商人經常聚集的一個海邊重鎮。Scarborough Fair在曆史上是一個從八月十五日
開始延續45天的交易集市。在那個年代持續如此之長的集市是很少見的。後來這個集
市逐漸冷清衰落，現在Scarborough隻是一個默默無聞的小鎮了。

作為歌曲，Scarborough Fair原是一首古老(大約作於十三世紀)的蘇格蘭民間謎歌
(riddle song)。那個年代不像現在有版權的說法，因此歌曲的作者沒有能夠留下姓名。
這樣的謎歌由漂流各地的遊唱詩人(bard或shaper)輾轉傳唱。因此年深月久，衍化出
許多不同的歌詞版本。

下麵的歌詞是比較全的傳統版本：

歌曲的主人是一個被情人拋棄的男人。盡管歌詞充滿詩意和微妙的情調，但在中世
紀時期隻能算是民歌，而不可能是貴族的作品。那個年代，貴族和騎士們隻能遠遠
地對一個女人在心裏暗暗愛慕，而那樣的傾情幾乎是不可能得到回響的。

據說其中一個版本的背景來自同時期的Whittington Fair，而不是Scarborough Fair。
其中一個解釋是基於歌中她毫無緣由或先兆的離開。那時在Scarborough被抓獲的小偷
或嫌疑犯常常在一種街頭法庭上被判處或在樹上吊死。於是後來Scarborough warning
在英語裏就成了"沒有先兆"的意思。因此，Scarborough Fair就蘊涵著歌者對她的離開
緣由毫無所知，或者原因過於複雜也就根本不予提及。 歌者給他的心上人安排了不可能
完成的事情，意味著有時候愛情需要突破日常生活中似乎不可能的壁障才有希望。如果
她能試圖去做那些不可能完成的事情，那麽她隻得返回到他的身邊向他求救，於是愛情
就有希望得到自然的展開和延續。或許就像常說的那樣，every heart grows merry in
time.

在第二個詩節(stanza)中出現的歐芹、鼠尾草、迷迭香和百裏香(parsley, sage,
rosemary and thyme) 是一個很重要的主題。今天人們對這四種植物沒有什麽特別
的感覺，但那個時代它們給人的聯想就像當今紅玫瑰與愛情的關係一樣，象征著歌
者對期待著心上人和自己具有的品質，因此她才有可能回到他的身旁。

按照那些相信植物療法的人的看法，歐芹Parsley (Petroselinum crispum)具有治療
消化不良的功能。比如，據說吃菠菜的時候如果嚼一片歐芹樹葉的話就能讓菠菜的苦
味消失，並易於消化。因此在中世紀歐芹被賦予一定的精神寓意的。鼠尾草Sage
(Salvia officinalis)的象征有著數千年的曆史，代表著力量。 迷迭香Rosemary
(Rosmarinus officinalis)表示忠誠，摯愛和掛念。古希臘時男人就送給自己的戀人
以迷迭香來表達愛慕，今天在歐洲新娘還有在頭上別上迷迭香樹枝的習俗。據說迷迭
香能讓人敏感和謹慎，於是在古羅馬當一個人麵對精神壓力的時候，大夫常常建議放
一小袋迷迭香樹葉子於枕頭下麵。迷迭香有時候用作比喻女性的愛，盡管有些遲緩，
卻強勁並持續長久。

在神話傳說中的中秋之夜，國王在荒野的百裏香Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)叢林
中與神仙們狂舞。但百裏香一般象征勇氣，在中世紀時騎士的盾牌上就有他的女人
給他繡上的百裏香的圖像。

於是，垂頭喪氣的歌者用這四種在中世紀眾所周知的植物，期望他的心上人能夠用
愛的溫柔來消融他們之間的誤會和痛苦，用毅力來度過他們分離的艱難時光，用忠
誠來陪伴孤獨的日子，用勇氣去挑戰那些不可能的事情並最終回到他的身旁。

起初這首歌被英國民歌之父Ewan MacColl 選進他編輯的一本介紹英國民歌的書中，
英國民歌手Martin Carthy後來又進行了再創作。1966年底，Paul Simon在英國時
將它改編成反戰色彩濃厚的歌曲，並收入他的專輯Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and
Thyme之中，後用作電影The Graduate的中插曲(其中的The Sound of Silence是
另一首廣為流傳的歌)。 Simon是猶太美國人，在英國劍橋攻讀文學專業。他在與
Carthy合作演唱時從Carthy那裏學會了這首歌，又把自己寫的一首反戰歌曲The
Side Of A Hill作為副歌和這首歌混在一起，用對比的手法表達了對和平的渴望。
Art Garfunkel似乎是學數學出身，為副歌作了曲，成為歌中的"頌歌"部分。兩人
在錄音時利用多軌技術把多個聲部疊加在一起，使人聲顯得特別豐富。據說崔健在
"七合板樂隊"時的一張專輯裏也曾翻唱過這首歌曲。

　　閑來無事，聽歌，聽老歌。Scarborough Fair是我很喜歡的一首老歌。因為它不那麽美國，因為它那種幽怨的低唱。 我總覺得它和《詩經》有一種很微妙的契合，縱然一個是公元之前，而另一個是百世以後。 它的旋律，仿佛是一陣清風，夾雜著野草野花的苦寒輕香，在大地上緩緩掠過後而我更看見一個穿白衣服的人搖著木鐸，邊走邊呼喚著蒼穹，在一望無際的大地與村怦之間采集夢幻。 真地很難忘卻這種莫名的聯想。很喜歡在異邦的文明之中，還能尋出這樣令我心折的古中國的意韻。 試著用《詩經》的格式翻了下，填到原曲中，竟也能唱。
