Fiona Rose

Dear Friend,

Thank you for your email to the WSPA.

Further to some reports (see this one from China.com: http://news.china.com/zh_cn/focus/2008dizhen/11067427/20080520/14854505.html ) we have received a number of enquiries as to whether dogs (and perhaps cats) are being killed by the authorities in China after the earthquake to prevent the potential spread of disease.

The WSPA has received no first-hand reports regarding this actually happening and without such knowledge we cannot respond.  We do accept that it is often the case that municipal authorities can respond to disasters by treating stray populations of dogs and cats inhumanely, often out of fear of the spread of disease (for example) and the lack of available expertise.  In the event that the WSPA is in a position to make an assessment of the animal welfare situation in the region and find that this is happening, we would aim to provide advice on humane methods of stray population management and attempt to allay any fears the local authorities and the local people may have.

No animal welfare organisations have secured the necessary permission to access the affected region so far, to our knowledge.

Please contact us again if you receive any further information.

Kind regards

Fiona Rose
