我和我的先生來美前素不相識。 我們在同一年來到美國一個北方城市的大學裏攻讀同一學科的博士。我倆都拿著全獎，讀書很用功，日子卻過得很簡樸。我們開著一輛1000美元買來的舊車，和另一對夫婦合住在一套離校5英裏的公寓裏。

學校裏的功課重，每日在學校做作業或項目要到淩晨一兩點才往回開。深夜的大街上清冷無人。田野裏升起的霧氣彌漫到公路上來。路燈和稀稀落落的幾間商店的霓虹燈招牌罩在光暈裏，像虛幻的舞台一樣。冷風把我們的困乏暫時吹走了。在這樣的時刻開車走在路上，有幾許害怕，幾許清醒。前不見古人，後不見來者，讓在異國他鄉的我們有些迷茫恍惚。

就在這樣的一個夜晚的歸途中，電台裏徐徐流出這首歌，觸動我的靈魂深處，成為我的最愛。日後每次聽到此歌，往事曆曆在目；仿佛回回頭見到自己一路走來的痕跡，又想要轉過頭來看清楚未來。
