這是民謠詩人Jim Croce在70年代的遺作。
創作背景源於Jim窮困潦倒的時候打電話給愛妻，總是看到好多士兵在排隊打電話，需要通過接線生轉撥。每個人的臉上都有著不一樣的表情，可是都懼怕聽到類似"Dear John"的消息。Dear John是美國一首悲情老歌，歌詞大意是男子遠征戰場，最後女友寄來了分手的信，信的開頭就是Dear John。Jim於是把這個場景寫進了這首名曲。
Operator是接線生的意思，每個打電話的人都希望他能給自己帶來好消息。可是愛情總是那麽弱不禁風，在遙遠的電話那頭，總會有無盡的歎息和悔恨。Jim在處理歌詞的時候，卻相當的平靜和理智，仿佛傷痛僅僅擦身而過，或者，那也是別人的事，而他隻是在敘述。
“親愛的，我電話過來，隻是告訴你，我現在過的很好”。
