鬱金香的英文名稱─Tulip，經考證，是從一個廢棄的法國文字Tulipan衍變而來的，原意為“頭巾”。
其來由據說是：喜愛植物的德國駐土耳其大使-布史貝底斯，1554年在土耳其的舊首都(伊斯坦布爾Istanbul)附近，第一次看見鬱金香時，被鬱金香嬌美的花姿和清淡香氣所迷住，不禁興衝衝地問：“這叫什麽花？這叫什麽花？"
