I don't quite get this sentence:

I assume it means "like one who seeks a vain excuse for delay, he rode away." But I don't get the logic. Does the delay refer to the delay he just had with stopping by and drinking the water?

When he hummed in court an old love-tune;
The other version has the lawyers smiled that afternoon, so I think here it refers to: the other lawyers laughed at the judge when he hummed the love-tune.

The other version(and the woman reading in the video too) has this (instead of wasting pain): But care and sorrow, and child-birth pain,
