My strongest memory from my childhood is when I tried to find some left over yams from a harvested field with my grandmother one day when I was 5 years old in 1960. It was the time when the Great Famine happened in China. Over 30,000,000 people died in China during that time. Everybody was hungry and wanted to find something to eat, so there were lots of people in the field with my grandmother and me. Actually, there was nothing left in the field after the harvest, neither yams nor the plants from the yams or their leaves. But even so, the people continued searching lots of times, hoping they would find something unexpected. When the people were searching in the field, someone yelled – “run, the managers are coming”! Everybody ran away very fast, except my grandmother and me with our empty cloth bag. I was a little girl and hungry, I couldn’t run fast. My grandmother was old, and she had very small feet which were damaged by foot-binding. The managers came in and surrounded us with a very bad manner. After seriously warning us, they grabbed our cloth bag and took it with them, even though the bag was empty. After many years, I still feel sad about losing the cloth bag. It really was a valuable property for a poor family at that time.  I also feel sad for my grandmother. She had a very difficult time during her whole life. Until she got old she still had to suffer from hunger.  I also remembered how hard it was for her to walk in the field with her damaged small feet. I can never forget the difficult time my family had during the Great Famine in China.
