• Mary Doherty: An anesthetist who was diagnosed with autism in her mid-40s
• Sue McGowan: A psychiatrist who was diagnosed with autism in her mid-40s
• Sebastian Shaw: A medical researcher who was diagnosed with autism at age 28
• Dr. JJ Mrá?ek: A resident doctor who was diagnosed with autism at age 32
• Tahleel Javed: Received a formal diagnosis for autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at 27 years old

According to Spectrum, surveys suggest that about 1 percent of doctors have autism. Some autistic doctors prefer academic or laboratory work to clinical posts. However, they can be excellent clinicians in all specialties with appropriate adjustments and empathetic colleagues. 

 

Autistic doctors reported many challenges in the workplace, including: 

 

• Poor mental health
• High rates of suicidal ideation
• Self-harm
• Prior suicide attempts

In 2019, Autistic Doctors International (ADI) was founded as an information and peer support group for doctors on the autistic spectrum.
