I hoed and trenched and weeded,
      And took the flowers to fair:
I brought them home unheeded;
      The hue was not the wear.

So up and down I sow them
      For lads like me to find,
When I shall lie below them,
      A dead man out of mind.

Some seed the birds devour,
      And some the season mars,
But here and there will flower,
      The solitary stars,

And fields will yearly bear them
      As light-leaved spring comes on,
And luckless lads will wear them
      When I am dead and gone.

我鋤地，我翻土，我除草，
       把花兒帶到集市去賣:
無人理睬的花兒我帶回家，
       這種色彩沒人喜歡佩戴。

我上上下下四處播種，
       讓像我一樣的少年來尋找，
那時我已躺在少年的腳下，
       成了死人不會再作思考。

有的種子會被鳥兒吃掉，
       有的種子會被風雨弄糟，
但還會有稀稀朗朗幾朵花兒，
       猶如天上的孤星那麽稀少。

每年土裏都會長出一些花朵，
       就像春天綻出的嫩葉一般，
不幸的少年會將它們佩戴，
       那時我已死去多年。

* 豪斯曼的這首詩，在詩集《西羅普郡一少年》中的編號為第 63 首。

        豪斯曼曾說過:“我想我應該把自己形容為一個‘高教會派的無神論者’(A High- Church Atheist)。”“高教會派”講究禮儀和傳統，有繁瑣的古老儀式，這是豪斯曼所反 對的，但他不反對“神”。這就是他說的“高教會派的無神論者”的含義。在他的詩中， 常常引用《聖經》的典故。比如，這首詩裏，第二節和第三節中的播種，就引用了 《聖經》“馬太福音 13:3-9”中的一段話:

        Matthew 13:3-9:

        And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

        馬太福音 13: 3-9 ：

        “他用比喻對眾人講了許多事，說:‘有一個撒 種的出去撒種。撒的時候，有的落在路旁，小鳥 飛來就吃掉了。有的落在泥土不多的石地上，因 為泥土不深，很快就長起來。但太陽一出來，就 把它曬幹，又因為沒有根就枯萎了。有的落在荊 棘裏，荊棘長大了，就把它擠住。有的落在好土 裏，結出果實，有一百倍的，有六十倍的，有三 十倍的。有耳的，就應當聽。’”

        這首詩是《西羅普郡一少年》這本詩集中的最後一首，所以，這個少年種花讓 後人采摘的故事明顯地比喻了詩人自己的詩。詩人的意思是:他寫的詩歌可能今天沒 有人喜歡，就像那少年種的花，因為顏色不時髦所以無人購買。但是，隻要他辛勤耕 耘，四處播種，將來會有跟他一樣的少年來采摘他種的花兒拿去佩戴。所以，即使今 天他的詩無人欣賞，但是以後一定會有人喜愛。事實上，《西羅普郡一少年》 —— 豪 斯曼的第一本詩集，一開始甚至沒有一個出版社願意出版，所以，詩人隻能自費印刷。 但出版後不久就引起大眾的注意，最後成了熱門作品，印了很多版，至今還有讀者。

        至於為什麽詩人說:他種的花兒，會有“不幸的少年”采去佩戴呢?這可以在他 的另一首詩中找到答案。在《更多的詩歌》這本詩集中，有一首序詩，題目叫〈人們 說我的詩歌很悲哀〉，詩中，豪斯曼說:他的詩“是為了所有不幸的人們，既沒有形成， 也沒有出生，讓他們遇到麻煩時閱讀”的。

        原詩四節，每節四句。譯詩每節雙句押一韻:第一節押 [ai]韻，第二和第三節押 [ao] 韻，第四節押 [an/ian] 韻。
