were the delusions of an egotistical and overly ambitious boy who should have listened when he was offered the chance

write because I I get angry about a lot of things and

when Im writing I feel like Im doing something about it like Im finally getting to speak my mind you see Jerry

this is what you need to be doing in your writing explore what it is that makes you angry and then put that into a story

no no no but heres the catch you still may never publish never

nope you may spend the rest of your life being rejected and now you have to ask

yourself a question are you willing to devote your life to telling

stories knowing that you may get nothing in

return and if the answer to that question is no well then you should go

out there and find yourself something else to do with your life because you are not a true

really but I hate Hollywood its a bunch of Jaguar driving jerks making crap for knuckleheads that cant read

thats the thing about girls every time they do something pretty you fall half in love with

loves the writing i get terrific feedback every time I submit you thats terrific but I havent had a story

published in eight months well have you thought about writing something with a little more pop to it more post than New Yorker oh I hate the post its a bunch

of sentimental crap i know i want to be a New Yorker writer and you will be but its never easy my love theres no harm

in dumbing it down once in a while we just got to get you published again publishing is everything no I dont even

know what I should write about oh

Jerry first of all you need to relax youre not going to do better work being so

stressed take that pretty girlfriend of yours on a date have some

that works at a lousy job and has a pretty wife and a bunch of stupid

celebrate what i have some exciting news the New Yorker read Slight Rebellion off

Madison and they want to publish it

the New Yorker yes they love your Holden Caulfield character they feel hes completely original im so happy for you

Jerry new Yorker i cant believe it well believe it my love to

publishing it really is

everything now they have a couple of notes that they want you to address

notes yes all writers have to go through this with every magazine and The New Yorker has more notes than most they

want all their stories to have a New Yorker signature to them

what if I dont want to do the notes

they told me there are problems with the story should I tell you

sure sure okay tell them I have problems first off they think Holdens drinking

comes out of nowhere they want it to be clearer hes an alcoholic no hes not an

alcoholic hes Hes just getting drunk because hes depressed about the girl well they think thats unclear i dont I

think thats perfectly clear well maybe you can make a slight adjustment so its not confusing for

some people also they think it would be nice if in the end Holden and Sally got back

together they specifically said We dont need to see it we just want the reader to have a sense that theyll end

up together. But they dont end up together thats not what happens why not because people dont end up together it usually doesnt work out okay I know in

every goddamn story in every goddamn magazine the couple always falls in love with a stupid kiss to make us feel all warm and fuzzy and full of Christmas

cheer but thats not what happens in real life someone always gets their heart broken and has a hard time getting over it

sometimes they drink because theyre upset even though theyre not

alcoholics i just want my writing to be truthful thats all

so what would you like me to tell them tell them Im very open to notes but

Holdens not an alcoholic and they dont end up together those are the only notes jerry you tell him I wont make those

changes

howd you know about that oh please they canned the Cfield story because you wouldnt take any of their notes you

Caulfield he deserves a novel really think so i know so hes a

after I enlisted in the army I bounced from base to base until they finally shipped me off to

England i knew army food would be bad but they promised us a steak dinner the night before the big invasion

but I just couldnt start the Cfield novel thats why I kept sending you short stories for the anthology I was

writing instead i had never written anything so personal

thats why he was a first person character i didnt want to begin Holdens story because I was scared I

wouldnt live long enough to finish it

this is a momentous hour in world history d-day the men of General Dwight

D eisenhower are fighting their way up the beaches in fire and blood into the fortress of Nazi Europe casualties in

this mammoth operation may reach a dreadful toll

i had stormed Normandy with six chapters in my bag and Id be lying if I didnt tell you Holdm got me through some rough

spells he gave me something to focus on when things werent going so

hot thats one of the things I loved most about writing your mind keeps on working on

your stories whether youve got a pen or a gun in your hand it just never stops creating

you okay you got to be okay

i did everything I could to keep on writing i really

did no pen no typewriter to hell with

them i kept on telling Holdens story even if it was only to myself [__] it

pneumonia and then Id probably

most of these I wrote before I went to Europe a few I wrote during the war what about the Cfield novel where are you

with that how about halfway what do you think youre going to finish

just I cant work on it anymore why not it brings back too many memories i want

to forget it all well have you written anything since you got

back i tried just cant do it

well well publish your anthology and Ill bet before long youll be back at that typewriter

hope so im not getting enough sleep so its hard to concentrate and sometimes I I

wake up and Im Im screaming no these are all very common postwar symptoms Jerry

okay and have you been painting at all

no no cuz Im not a painter im a writer yes yes of

course writer no with the nightmares I just

Sometimes I have flashbacks at the camps during the day too its almost like Im there i can

smell is there anything I can do for that no these are all very common occurrences from soldiers returning from

combat its just a face yeah

touched a drop in years oh thats right you joined a temperance union joined

they started i also joined a divorce union well kind of more enulled if you want to

get technical about it what happened something that never should have i think she might be a Nazi

are you serious maybe

well now see that is something you should write about have you started up again no

um you know I think once the anthology is published thatll hopefully get me going again

what the anthologies just turned out to be a little more complicated than I

thought how well you know we dont publish on our own we dont have the money for it so we have this

relationship with Lip and Cod to finance our long form and theyve rejected the book they they

dont want to publish it so youre not going to publish folks its me Jerry its them i I nearly ended the

relationship with that you nearly ended the relationship how nearly brave of you that must have been come on no no no

that means a lot to me i mean you know that was the only reason I came back from Germany you knew how much it meant to me how much I needed that at least it

brought you home no I didnt want to come home jerry Im sorry theres nothing I can do all right i went to war

with these guys over this war war war you went to war with these guys

that was a bad choice of words i didnt mean I landed on D i understand no no no no you have no idea im only alive

because we missed our landing by a thousand yards but I saw them all get killed i saw every single one of them get killed i should be dead too i

i keep having nightmares about the war almost every night sometimes I wake from screaming

you also see it during the day

how do you know before I studied the teachings of Rama Krishna I was a freedom fighter in India against the

British it was the violence I witnessed that led me on the same path that has

led you to me you think the nightmares will ever go away oh

yes but first you must heal from the violence that has been inflicted upon your soul

New Yorker was going to publish slight rebellion off Madison my first call for the story well theyve been reviewing

all their past submissions from before the war and they are considering publishing it really yes really

i dont know if you remember but they had specific notes you didnt want to take and if you want them to publish it

youre going to have to make their changes oh come on at least hear them

out publishing is everything

well The New Yorker holds a special place in American literature and its important to us that our stories have a

uniform vision i mean we want the reader to be able to read a story and know that it could only run in The New Yorker well

thats exactly what I dont want you dont want to be published in The New Yorker no no i love The New Yorker i

just dont want to write stories like everyone else you know the war hero doesnt always get a

parade sometimes he blows his head off i want to create a new form of writing a

modern form about modern society in which the pain of our existence is laid

out truthfully for everyone to

see ill make a deal with you if you try the notes and dont feel they make your

story better then Ill submit your original version i dont want Holden and Sally to end up together thats not what

happens in real life at least not in my life well thats fine it was just a thought we had i thought it was a big

sticking point for you not if you feel that destroys the integrity of the piece look Jerry Im not trying to take your

story over or write it for you but you have a wonderful voice but you

overexlain i trust that the reader is going to understand you

talking about the bgeoa capitalist infrastructure of modern butoracy or maybe there was the war but its really

up to the reader jerry is in the very beginnings of his first novel and Bill says you may be writing a novel so when

theres one thing thats been weighing on me a novel Im trying to wanting to finish but

cant scared if I work in it the nightmares will come back is it about the war no its about a character I

wrote about during the war he was with me everywhere I went every time you attempt to work on it you feel the war

again you know you never really get this amount of brain flesh out of your

nostrils perhaps finishing this book is the way for you to move on

right theres just so many distractions everywhere and you must remove

distractions well this is it

but a year ago you sent me the kindness letter about my writing asking if you could publish a book of my short stories

of course i love those stories thank you i just completed my first novel and

um if if if you like uh Id like you to publish

it i am honored youd think of me when can I read it

you know the pages of this book were with me when I stormed the beaches of

Normandy i wrote them in Hitlers death camps and in the hospital where I could barely remember my own

name i dont think Id be alive if it wasnt for this book

im really flattered Jerry is it a war story

no its about a troubled kid during the Christmas holidays

well I know you want us to give you some helpful notes on the novel but the truth is we both think it has a lot of

problems i just dont buy Hold him thats the whole book well he seems

phony as he would like to say hes so negative all the time he just doesnt feel real and your style is too writer

conscious i feel youre trying to be clever on almost every page did you at least think it was funny

yes but in a way where I feel the writers being too witty youre making a real name for yourself and I would hate

for this book to throw that goodwill away the best note I can give you is to just put it in a drawer for a year or

two is that bad im afraid it is

i loved it Jerry i really did thank God but these things are never

easy what do you mean my boss didnt get it but I fought for

it and he said hed be willing to publish if you did a major rewrite

what does he want rewritten he doesnt understand Holden what makes him tick and I got to

admit I found him confusing at times he hates everything and he hes always so

sarcastic is Is Holden supposed to be crazy

jerry no ive thought about it and I cant do a rewrite i wont do it im not going to change a word holden would never approve you might not have to what

do you mean look I didnt tell you I was going to do this but I sent it to one person just to test the waters who john

Woodburn and Little Brown okay well how was the water hot very hot he He liked

it no he loved it he thinks its an American masterpiece he He He said masterpiece thats what he said and wait

you told him I wouldnt make any changes yes i told him that that could be a

problem and he still wants to meet with you to discuss marketing and distribution hold on marketing we also

love this one for the cover holden in his red hunting hat

i hate it so whats wrong with this one the reader

needs to imagine for themselves what they want Holden to look like what if we just use it for the galleys i think it

would really No I dont want any galleys sent out advanced copies are crucial for

publicity purposes i dont want any publicity you dont want any publicity

no I dont care if its successful i just want it to be good the less

attention the book gets the more the story will affect people it wont affect anyone if they dont read it

well Im not doing press this isnt about me or publicity or

reviews this is about Holden

jerry do you want us to publish this book or merely to print it because if

you just want a printer then I suggest you type up a few hundred copies and send them out yourself
