How about thinking this way?

To say whether a country is advanced, civilized and powerful or not, or a country has future or not, I guess that we’ve got to think about the following facts.
1. Technology
2. Inventions
3. Political system
4. Population
5. Military
6. Economic
7. Culture
8. Education
9. Geography and climate
10. Resources
11. Global military and political environment
12. And timing
All these facts are related to each other. Theoretically, any country can be world power or can be destroyed. However, one thing we would love to point out that Americans including those like you and me just immigrated from other countries are pretty smart and intelligent. Americans try their very best to make America better and better directly or indirectly. Four great ancient Chinese inventions made China great for over thousand years and super power of feudal society of Tang, Yuan and Qing. It is hard to believe that inventions and new technologies of car, airplane, telephone, TV, satellite and PC, etc. make America rich and powerful only for a couple of ten years. Plus, America has a very good and effective political system. I guess that’s why people from world try to come America though they have to sacrify a lot.
As Chinese Americans, we certainly hope that China is better and better. We are happy to see that the economic growth is 9% in GNP in China, much higher than other countries, including America. But we’ve got be realistic and practical to see how far China can go. Otherwise, we don’t help China but hurt her. For instance, each of us here has experience of learn English. We feel that we make progress every day by knowing one or two words or sentences at the very beginning. Do we still have this great feeling of that progress now in America? Can we say that our English is better than those who can read Shakespeare though they did not make any progress in English or might even forget a couple of English words? Absolutely not.
As a foreign visitor or guest, no one would be foolish and say that China has no future and China growth is nothing. A foreign scholar does not see the entire China, but few spots. Plus we have every reason to believe that some foreigners over state the growth in China, not on friendly purpose. They try to persuade world that China is a potential threat if China is too good. Remember that not every good word means good. Some good words can be very harmful, especially at this time when China needs foreign assistance like financial assistance of trade, dollars and investment, and a stable and a peaceful internal environment.
We should take great and good comments from a foreigner into account when we think about China, but don’t be seriously of these comments. We Chinese know better than any one else that China has long way to go. The economic growth in China is the purpose to learn Chinese is a pretty good, not necessarily a smart and intelligent way of thinking. To learn Chinese and keep Chinese cultures has nothing to do with loving China or not. Personally I do believe that we may be able to love China even better if you are more Americanized so that we can be more successful in America as Chinese American.
