XXXII

Their Seed the Sowers Scatter

Alfred Edward Housman (1859 – 1936)

Their seed the sowers scatter

        Behind them as they go.

Poor lads, ’tis little matter

        How many sorts they sow,

        For only one will grow.

The charlock on the fallow

        Will take the traveller’s eyes,

And gild the ploughland sallow

        With flowers before it dies,

        But twice ’twill not arise.

The stinging-nettle only

        Will aye be found to stand:

The numberless, the lonely,

        The filler of the land,

        The leaf that hurts the hand.

That thrives, come sun, come showers;

        Blow east, blow west, it springs;

It peoples towns, and towers

        About the courts of Kings,

        And touch it and it stings.

      將土地填滿,
      葉子還讓手痛楚不堪。
無論晴雨,都繁榮興旺;
       不管東風西風,都成長茁壯;

        “And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.” (Matthew 13:3-9)
