A man went to a barbershop to have his hair cut and his beard trimmed. 一個男士去理發店削剪頭發和胡須。
As the barber began to work, they began to have a good conversation.
理發師剪發時，他們開始談話。
They talked about so many things and various subjects.
When they eventually touched on the subject of God, the barber said:"I don't believe that God exists."
他們談了許多事和不同的話題，當他們話題最終觸及到上帝時，理發師說：“我不相信上帝存在。”
"Why do you say that?" asked the customer.
“你為什麽這樣說？”顧客問。
"Well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that God doesn't exist.Tell me, if God exists, would there be so many sick people? Would there be abandoned children? If God existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain. I can't imagine a loving God who would allow all of these things."
“你走到外麵街上，就會意識到上帝不存在。告訴我，若上帝存在，會有這麽多病人嗎？會有遺棄的孩子嗎？若上帝存在，就不會有悲傷和疼痛。我無法想象一個充滿愛的上帝會讓這些事發生。”
The customer thought for a moment,but didn't respond because he didn't want to start an argument.
這個顧客想了一會兒，沒有回答因為他不想引發爭論。
The barber finished his job and the customer left the shop.
理發師理好發，顧客離開店。
Just after he left the barbershop, he saw a man in the street with long, stringy, dirty hair and an untrimmed beard. 離開理發店之後，他看見街上有個人留著很雜亂的長發和邋遢的胡須。
He looked dirty and unkempt. The customer turned back and entered the barber shop again and he said to the barber:"You know what? Barbers do not exist."
他看上去很髒亂邋遢。顧客又回到理發店對理發師說：“你知道嗎？理發師不存在。”
"How can you say that?" asked the surprised barber. "I am here, and I am a barber. And I just worked on you!"
“你如何能這樣說？”理發師很奇怪地問，“我就在這兒，我是理發師。我剛給你理發。”
"No!" the customer exclaimed. "Barbers don't exist because if they did, there would be no people with dirty long hair and untrimmed beards, like that man outside."
“不！”顧客大聲說。“理發師不存在，因為若他們存在，就沒有人會如門外那人一樣，有髒亂的頭發和邋遢的胡須。”
"Ah, but barbers DO exist! That's what happens when people do not come to me."
“噢，但理發師確實存在！若人不來找我理發，才會如此髒亂邋遢。”
"Exactly!" affirmed the customer. "That's the point! God, too, DOES exist! That's what happens when people do not go to Him and don't look to Him for help.That's why there's so much pain and suffering in the world."
“正是這樣！”顧客確定地說。“這正是關鍵！上帝也一樣確實存在！當人們不去找尋他，不依靠他的幫助，就是為什麽世界上有如此多的悲傷和疼痛的原因。”
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
