At first, Yuan was spared the death penalty when his wife ponied up $6 billion in oil company stock and tave it to the national government.

Of course, he got the money in the first place from a large state-owned company, so, in affect, he just gave it back.

However, before that, he amassed his own fortune by investing the money.

It is said that he did was surprised when they showed up to escort him to his execution.
