The war in Middle East is no longer just between Israel and Hamas, it also includes Lebanon, Iran and the U.S. It can be as simple as calling any side to stop. The hornets nest was disturbed by Hamas first. So whom to blame is obvious. Should Israel attack Lebanon? Should Iran support Hezbollah, or Trump attack Iran? We can't tell anyone anything anymore. It's a hot mess.
Regarding the relationship between Israel and American Jewry, the relationship is pretty stable until recently.' Let my right arm wither, lest I forget Jerusalem', ' Next year in Jerusalem'. The ties are not only historical but emotional. Israel is the ancestral homeland to the Jews. The rest of the world Jewry is the diaspora who longs to go back home after the long Exile. Holocaust sent the Ashkenazi Jews back, then Israel took the Jews in the neighboring countries in. Why? There's nowhere for them to go. If we as Jews don't support Israel's right to exist, survive and thrive, we won't have a permanent home. A people without a state is the people on exile forever. So Jews who don't support Israel are delusional. They cannot be kept safe without a Jewish state existing. Hard lessons learned through Spanish inquisition, Pogrom, WWII.

Ellie, agree that the history is complicated. I also agree that Israel has legitimate security concerns.Where I disagree is the idea that supporting the Israeli government and supporting Jewish people are the same thing.The Israeli government does not represent all Jews in the world, just as the Chinese government does not represent all Chinese people.For me, the issue is not Israel\'s right to exist. The issue is whether the current war has gone too far and whether the United States should support it unconditionally.Those are two different questions.
Abandoning Israel is unthinkable because it's the biggest betrayal to the Jewish people of the world. Thus it has a great moral implication. I agree that history in the Middle east is very complicated. Who's the assailant, who's the victim are not so simple as it seems to be. It's important to look back into the history after WWII for answers. The Arabs didn't want any Jewish state after the UN partition verdict. So they launched many attacks on Israel from 1948 to 1973, the Yom Kippur war, and lost many territories. They were not agreeing on the vote for two state partitions in 1947 so they launched the war in 1948. There you go. Israel has been our ally since the end of WWII and will continue to be one, because it has survived many wars through its own persistence, not because it was aided by the U.S. No one would help you if you don't help yourself.
