6-people thoretical physics group in Bell lab. Looks like he was coworker of Phillip Anderson (another Novel prize winning theoretical physicist). P W. Anderson almost went to teaching univiersity. He could not get research professor position. Luckily his phd advisor at Harvard got him this Bell lab position last minute (month or week?).
I think he became theoretical biophysicist later from theoretical solid state physicist at princeton. Bill Bialeck is his coworker (theoretical biophysicist) and he was quoted in the conference call.
