大家還在讀 Gatsby 嗎？

 

準備讀第五章。很認真地讀了第四章，有幾點收獲和疑問和大家討論一下.  不對的地方請讀過的朋友糾正。

1.  這章開始， Fitzgerald 花了三頁紙的篇幅介紹到Gat*****y 的豪宅參加Party的“客人”。我剛開始看了挺煩的，想跳過去。後來耐著性子看完。發現 Fitzgerald 這段不是隨便寫的。從東卵 （East Egg）和 西卵（West Egg） 來的客人背景大不相同。東卵來的客人是 Old Money，名校畢業，從事醫生等職業。西卵來的客人是New Money，大部分是演藝界，是”檔次”不夠高的一撥人。後來我又在網上看了一篇介紹，說是那些人的名字都很有講究，從名字中可以看出一個人的來曆，宗教，和背景。這對我來說 Too much，不想一個一個去研究名字，也就作罷了。精讀也是有限度了 （給自己找理由，哈哈）。

 

2.  Fitzgerald 在描述這些客人從哪來時，用了很多倒裝句，強調那些客人來的地方。我覺得我們可以學著用用。我在這裏copy 幾句：

 

-          From East Egg, then, came the Chester Beckers  and Leeches (The Chester Beckers and Leeches came from East Egg)

 

-          From West Egg came the Poles and the Mulreadys ….

 

-          Also from New York were the Chromes and the Backhyssons ….

 

3.  看到 nineteen-hundreds, 剛開始以為是 1900 – 1999 這段時間，後來查了查，發現指的是 1900 – 1909 這段時間。

 

4.  前幾天，看了小曼貼的 Wai Chee Dimock 的 Gat*****y 講座。Dimock 說第四章中關於 limousine 的 white driver 和 black passengers 的那一段， “is a completely unnecessary detail'。 我仔細看了這一段，同意 onceuponatime 的觀點，從曆史的角度講，這個細節非常有必要。因為在二十年代，it was the most ridiculous thing that could happen （white chauffeur and black passengers）. 這個細節用來強調 Anything can happen, and even Gat*****y could happen.

 

5.  有幾句話比較費解，直到現在還是似懂非懂：

 

-          They evoked no image except that of a turbaned “character” leaking sawdust at every pore as he pursued a tiger through the Bois de Boulogne.

 

這個“character” 指的是 Gat*****y 嗎？ 這句話是說Gat*****y 說的話漏洞很多嗎？

 

-          He came alive to me, delivered suddenly from the womb of his purposeless splendor.

 

這句話似懂非懂，看中文翻譯也覺得莫名其妙。誰能幫助 Paraphrase 一下。謝謝！
