I remember when I went for the parents evenings, the teacher was using an assessment sheet. Ask the school if they have something similar.

They focus more on developing broad interest, being creative and communicative intead of remembering few numbers or letters.My son used to dislike learning words and we were told by the teacher not to push him. If he didn't like it, just leave him until he's ready. Also they don't require the kids to spell the words perfectly. If the words can be read out and it makes sense, that's fine.
