To renounce U.S. citizenship, you must voluntarily appear in person before a U.S. consular or diplomatic officer in a foreign country and sign an oath of renunciation. The process is complex and may include the following steps: 

1. Contact the U.S. embassy or consulate in the country where you intend to live to schedule an appointment 
2. Review and acknowledge the Department of State's information on loss of nationality 
3. Attend at least one in-person interview with a U.S. diplomatic or consular officer 
4. Prepare the required documents and renunciation forms, including DS-4080 
5. Pay the fee, which is currently $2,350 but could increase in the future 
6. Obtain State Department approval 
7. File your final tax return
