There are three insurance/bond issues.

1.  worker's comp.  A licensed contractor should carry worker's comp for his own injury at work.

2.  bond.  protect the project in case contractor defaults during project. 

3.  liability insurance,  any injury caused by the contractor to others, including damage to property and bodily injury to others including homeowners and passerbys.
