Now there is no Churchill to pull us together: unpleasant

The samo. Samo, once more. Unfortunately, today there is no Churchill to pull us together.

Mr. Churchill (a man of destiny) said, " If your going through Hell, keep going."

This country wants peace, no war! 99.99% of Brits did not want war!

Racious purity?

"He was a stubborn old bugger who lived in the past, but he never gave up! He was the right man at the right time."

"On the contrary, he was always looking forward, especially in world affairs! He saw the future "

(a great film, similar in style to Remains of The Day...another great film.)

Cast: Albert Finney as Churchill, Vanessa Redgrave as Clementine—just a perfect pair!  This is a beautifully written film incorporating several real Churchill quotes. The incidents are largely based on fact.

This film is remarkable both for context and relevance. It illustrates the same reluctance of the British people to face reality while simultaneously believing all will be well. The 1930’s were not dissimilar to nowadays, which again very few seem to be concerned about. History repeats itself only for different names of human beings.

Sad? Happy as you got chances to make a difference!

How so?

Proceed.

1:00:17
it was you I came to see me please do sit down thank
1:00:22

1:00:28
Prime Minister feels it would be advantageous if your husband did not see quite so much of Mr
1:00:33
Churchill what do you mean it's perhaps not wise not good for him not wise for
1:00:39
who your husband well then shouldn't you be telling this to my husband I'm quite
1:00:45
sure he takes note of what you say what my husband does is his own business I
1:00:50
wouldn't dream of trying to interfere no no of course not but do remember your husband is the head of an important part
1:00:56
part of the foreign office it's not a good idea for him to tell Mr Churchill what's going on why if indeed he has
1:01:04
been please Mrs wigram don't let argue about this please Mr Peter don't treat
1:01:09
me like a child if your husband persists in seeing
1:01:14
Winston he may find himself being posted somewhere inconveniently distant which would of course be
1:01:21
difficult with regard to your son; difficult for him to travel, I mean
1:01:26
difficult, and I should imagine finding the appropriate medical assistance in certain parts of the
1:01:32
world I dare say it would mean you're having to stay here; you've made a foolish mistake, Mr
1:01:39
pettifer oh a tactical error when a member of the government comes to my house and threatens me so openly it only
1:01:46
goes to show how extremely important it is that my husband continue his friendship with Mr Churchill; that is my
1:01:52
opinion anyway
1:01:57
please give my regards to your husband do tell him what I said I think I prefer not
1:02:03
to good afternoon Mrs
1:02:12
wigram what do you want Mr Churchill I'm looking for a letter what letter I
1:02:17
thought there might be something from clamy not [Music]

...

well perhaps the prime minister's right perhaps we should try to find a
1:09:01
compromise with her Hitler what don't be ridiculous we know that's impossible then perhaps perhaps we should let him
1:09:08
have his own way you got to say gray what ridiculous nonsense is this gra
1:09:13
you're tired we should go home hundreds of thousands of people will die
1:09:20
millions and I should be responsible WIS that's just not true partly responsible
1:09:25
then how would you be remotely responsible by showing those papers to Winston by stirring up public opinion by
1:09:33
making it impossible for the government to reach a settlement with the Nazis Hitler is Unstoppable in three years
1:09:39
he's made himself dictator of Germany he's dumped the Treaty of Versa and rebuilt the Armed Forces he'll March into Austria and then czechslovakia and
1:09:47
then God knows what the whole of Europe there may be a war I grant you
1:09:54
that nevertheless we shall win how can you say that it's just
1:10:01
Mindless optimism when I was in school I had a friend called Merlin
1:10:07
Evans and one day we were talking about what we would do when we were grown up and I don't know why I said this or
1:10:16
why I thought it but I said one day in the future Britain will be in great
1:10:24
Danger and it will fall to me to save London and the
1:10:30
Empire
school boy fantasy I want you to play for England or climb
1:10:36
Everest my destiny and I truly believe

1:10:43
it you're an extraordinary man Winston I am I know it nobody but you could say
1:10:49
that sort of thing and expect people to believe it Destiny is what I believe in
1:10:56
there the commands we must
1:11:03
[Music]
1:11:12

1:11:29
[Music] all over Europe it is the hush of suspense and in
1:11:36
Many Lands it is the hush of fear during these last few years the
1:11:45
world has grown Gravely darker we have steadily disarmed partly
1:11:52
with a sincere desire to give a lead to other countries and partly through the severe
1:11:58
Financial pressure of the time but a change must now be
1:12:04
made we must not continue longer on a course in which we alone are growing
1:12:10
weaker by ger is growing
1:12:15
[Music] stronger prime
1:12:21
minister oh hello Wy
1:12:26
I hear there's a nonsensical rumor that you're about to retire please state that that isn't the
1:12:34
case well I should be making an official announcement in due course but please be
1:12:39
discreet I don't want everybody to know I'm very surprised you're much loved in
1:12:45
the country s I've had my day I'm exhausted know some days I'm so tired I
1:12:51
can hardly turn over the pages of a book we've uh had our differences profound
1:13:00
differences but I've always admired your great political
1:13:07
skills Winston let me tell you something to my mind war is the greatest Folly
1:13:13
that can afflict mankind no absolutely no question about it please don't interrupt now maybe you're right about
1:13:19
Hitler perhaps this war is inevitable but I believe that I am also right I
1:13:24
have done everything everything in my power to preserve peace and I would do exactly the same all over
1:13:31
again Bloodshed sorrow irreparable loss that's what I've been hoping to
1:13:39
prevent but as I say you may well be right
1:14:04
so many telegrams today German troops are on the March thousands of them hence
1:14:11
all the telegrams Hitler's planning to invade the world and we're planning to do nothing about it what' you make of that

Churchill: "Rafe acted heroically, not because he was unaware of the dangers ahead, but because he recognized and feared them deeply. Despite that fear, he faced those risks head-on. There's no greater measure of bravery than a man who acts in spite of his fear." https://youtu.be/2xA4FPjsXOY?t=4715

"Buggered up"—That Pushkin (Russian poet) quote completely lifted me out of a certain pre-election mood. Thanks.

*** H/t:

@jeremyrawlins9009  I’m ex-RAF. My father is ex-Navy. I have been based abroad and every time I was proud to be British. I was young though. However, I felt that being reasonable, moral and respectful was part of the basis on which I felt that pride. I no longer have that pride. Lies, misinformation, and the readiness to believe in it as a justification for hate, prejudice and even violence. Then we have those expressing opinions in votes that they have little to no knowledge of and made no effort to gain that knowledge. I'm less than proud, but I'm more ashamed of my birth association. Quite sad in my increasing age and would have left the U.K. a number of years ago if I wasn’t stuck here because people with me don’t want to leave. I am left to fester in the middle that others have decided for me.
No matter how many times I see this movie, I cry. The world is in such a mess and tomorrow the USA votes. Where are the leaders that can inspire, have integrity, and weather the storm? I have read everything about Churchill, have his picture in my office, and even named a cat "Winston.' I loved his leadership; despite his dark days, he brought such great leadership to the UK and to the world.
BAHAHAHA. I adore Winston Churchill. He was a very unpleasant person. Now do you understand why Trump just got elected? He is also unpleasant. Now Drill baby drill !
