a traditional IRA. It will save a lot of headache down the road.

A traditional ira could have pre-tax and after tax contribution.

Your 401k has pre-tax contribution. If you roll your 401k to a traditional IRA, you have a lot to explain when you take money out of it eventually. There are other drawbacks too...
