First of all, I like this image. It conveyes a bunch of feelings to me, which I can describe as positive ones. This is related to the general appearance of Your model, and with the b/w and light You used. The feelings that I have while watching, are to see a wise, warm hearted lady, who is intelligent, understanding and relaxed. I get a feeling of a subtle irony or even sarcasme, but in a friendly way. She is experienced, has learned her lessons. And she is individual, nonconformist. Short up: sympathetic. I am aware of the fact, that I only interpretate and do of know her, but this is, what I believe to see in her. And this not oly because of her facial expression and cloths (as far as visible) but because of the clear b/w, that emphasises her experienced side of "having understood life" and the great use of light. It is soft, subtle, unobtrusive, but clear and bright, as well as dark. This too emphasises the "story" she seems to tell. Two compositional aspects or stylistic devices, if You like to say it this way, are very prominent too, and less "self explainatory" as the mentioned ones. The aspect, hat she is placed as extreme to the border of frame, and the large dark space on her right. This space I can understand. The dark parts of life she went through, or the dark parts of her soul, no one ever will understand or even get to know, may be she included. This makes sense of course. But the dark part is as large that it came into my conscience. I began to realise it and this pulled me a bit back from flowing in this image into reality "ah, here is a large dark part, why is it that way....." I think this part important, but may be, I would make it a bit smaller , less wide. The impact would be there too, it doesn't need to be as large, to do its "work" ;-). Second is her being placed at the border. Here too I think, You can think about. It conveyes - to me only may be- an impact of "narrow". And a bit a feeling of leaning against a wall to help her. And both does not fit really to what I see in her. She is strong, she is wide in her mind (I believe :-)) so "narrow" or "needs help to stand" both do not fit. I see the mysthique aspect she also has, this "difficult to understand, always something new, something unknown", already stressed by the black part. And I do believe that this partly hidden way of presentation too is intended to emphasise this. And therefore it's a good thought. But as other, contradictionary feelings (narrow especially) too are conveyed, this too might be a stylistic device, worth to rethink. I do believe that to place her so her hair completely is in frame (left shoulder cut), and her right shoulder is placed at about 2/3 frame might be a composition, that still conveyes Your ideas, but is less prominent, and hereby distracting. What You did her with natural light really is impressive, great work, a wonderful portrait Thomas.
