不要抱怨

I was always complaining about wind or rain and I thought I was fully justified. Though it was nothing unusual for the arrival of wind or rain, it caused inconvenience for me to go out, sometimes it even created an awful atmosphere, so I blamed it strongly. I had every reason to do so, and I spoke plausibly and at length.

On a rainy day a meteorologist I met was very puzzled at my great agitation caused by rain that made a little inconvenience for me.

He asked,"Have you ever seen typhoon?" I shook my head. I had no experience of how overwhelming it was when it swept everything away in its way?

"Everybody curses it for the destruction it brings to mankind. But I'd ask: Do you know what would happen to the world if there were no typhoon?"

I shook my head again.

"Well, let me tell you," the meteorologist said. "Without it the shortage of fresh water will be aggravated, for it is a great source of water supply on earth. If there were no typhoon there would be a greater imbalance in the distribution of warmth. The equatorial area that receives the most sunshine on earth depends entirely on typhoon to disperse heat. Without typhoon the tropics would be even hotter while the frigid zones much colder. As a result the temperate zones would disappear from the world..."

Ignorance made me shortsighted. I disliked wind only because it ruffled my hair. I hated rain merely because I had to carry an umbrella. But I had no idea at all that typhoon--something much more violent, something a thousand times more disturbing than wind or rain--was a must to the existence of mankind.

As no road on earth goes all the way on level ground, there's no person in the world who can do whatever he pleases.

Hard as it is for people to guard against typhoon, it is advisable for a man to stop to think for a moment before he complains, "What if typhoon disappeared all together? What would the world become then?" The answers will render him calm and lead him closer to truth--he will be better aware of the world he lives in.



我經常埋怨風，埋怨雨，而且理由充分。雖然這不過是很平常的風很平常的雨，但因為它們給自己的出行帶來了不便，甚至在我眼前製造出某種可怕的氛圍，我責怨起來總是底氣十足、振振有辭。

但有一個雨天，我見到一位氣象學家，他對我隻因為雨天給我帶來小小的不便就如此憤懣很不理解。

他問我：“你不沒有見過台風？”我搖頭。摧枯拉朽的台風，我並沒有親曆過。

“每個人都在詛咒台風給人類帶來的破壞。可是，如果沒有台風，你知道這個世界會怎樣嗎？”

我還是搖頭。

“那好，我告訴你。”氣象學家說，“如果沒有台風，全世界的水荒會更嚴重。台風可以為人類提供大量的淡水資源。如果沒有台風，地球上的冷熱會更不均衡。日照最多的赤道地區全靠台風來驅散熱量，否則，熱帶會更熱，寒帶會更冷，而溫帶將不存在……”

因為無知，因為短視，我隻知道風會吹亂我的頭發，隻知道雨天出門要多帶一把雨傘，卻沒想到比這暴虐一千倍的台風卻是人類生存的必須！

如同世上沒有一條路總是一馬平川，世上也沒有一個人可以隨心所欲。

盡管台風讓人防不勝防，但是，在埋怨之前，一個人隻要能夠想想“如果沒有台風，世界將會怎樣？”那麽，想過之後，他一定會更心平氣和，更接近真理，也更懂得他生活的世界。
