A rule of thumb

If an item is indefinitely dividable, most likely it is uncountable. For example, you can divide water into smaller portions indefinitely , but water is still water. However, after a desk being broken up, a desk is no longer a desk. Of course, you can come up with "indefinite" counter-examples, but, generally speaking, the rule applies well to most scenarios.
