First of all I would like to express my appreciation for your
kind advice in advance.
I am going to attend an interview for a Canadian federal law
enforcement agent position soon. I would like to have your
kind comments about the strategy and way how to answer those
situational (behavioural) question logically and professionally.
By the way, in the interview they are going to check whether I possess
the following 4 competences:
1. Enforcement orientation
2. Effective interactive communication
3. Dependability
4. Professionalism
One of their questions is as below:
You're an off-duty law enforcement officer and was invited to attend
a barbecue party at a colleague's house. There at his backyard you found
that he had one item (say generator) which obviously belongs to the agency. Your co-worker is your buddy and what will do about this?
I am aware of the format of answering situational questions by
using S.T.A.R. (situation, task, action and result). But what would
you comment if I answer the question the following way:
First, I analyze the situation to make sure that the item belongs to the
Agency (government organization).
Then, I brainstorm all the possible options and list up the pros and cons
to each solution.
Lastly, I decide to talk with my co-worker to find out what happened.
If he confesses that he stole it from the agency, I would strongly
suggest him to return it to the Agency immediately. After one or two days
I will confirm if he eventually returns. Otherwise I will bring this
issue to the management.
As a conclusion my reaction to this event demonstrated my
professionalism, high work ethic and flexibility in solving
delicate problems.
Anyhow I am sincerely looking forward to having your kind comments
on answering those situational interview questions effectively.
Thanks and have a great weekend.
