Lesson 15
The secretary told me that Mr. Harmsworth would see me. I felt very nervous when I went into his office. He did not look up from his desk when I entered. After I had sat down, he said that business was bad. He told me that the firm could not afford to pay such large salaries. Twenty people had already left and I knew my turn had come.

Mr. Harmsworth, I said in aweak voice.

Don’t interrupt. He said.

Then he smiled and told me I would receive an extra 100 pounds a year.

When the secretary told me Mr. Harmsworth would like to see me, I thought it must be bad news. I thought I would get laid off because twenty people had been fired so far. I entered into his office and he seemed very cold to me. He complained to me the economy was bad and the company was unable to support all the salaries. I tried to explain but he stopped me. He told me he would increase my wages by one hundred pounds.
