Definition

   to mock the opinion of older generations

 

Examples

   1) My professor said that the younger generation is too reliant on

      technology, so I just muttered 'OK Boomer' to myself.

   2) When my uncle started talking about how easy it was to pay for college

      back in his day, I just replied with a sarcastic 'OK Boomer'.

 

Etymology

   It emerged from broader societal discourse, and gained significant audience

   through online culture. eg TikTok

 

Synonyms

   "Alright, old timer", "copy that, fossil"

I learned this phrase from "The Fourth Turning is Here" by Neil Howe who

expounded on the cyclic nature of history and the concept of the saeculum, an

80- to 100-year period divided into four generations. In the last century, for

example, there were the Silent, the Greatest, the Boomers, and the X generations.

 

Boomers, born between 1946-1964, are still active. Today's youth would be the

Millennials and Gen Z and they would more likely to say "Okay, Karen" to

lectures from us Xers, as most Karens, the entitled, rude, bossy type, are Gen X.
