Definition: extremely boring

Etymology

   The phrase is thought to have originated in the early 20th century.

It rained cats and dogs and wouldn't let up on the fifth day of my recent trip

to my hometown. The wind gusted, the sky scowled, the land flooded, and the

temperatures fell. After visiting the county museum, which hoarded copies of

fascinating volumes on regional subjects in a reading room but was not lending

or selling any, as if trying its best to keep the knowledge local, I checked in

at a drab leaky hotel opposite the People's Government complex, the only one in

that part of the town that accepted passports.

 

It would've bored my pants off had I not packed in my only luggage, a sports

duffle bag, Tom Wolfe's bestseller "The Bonfire of The Vanities." The stories,

half a dozen cigarettes, and the downpour outside, made the second half of the

day a perfect treat.
