zig when others zag

This phrase symbolises one to do something unexpected (unique) when everyone else is following the same path.  It suggests to do the opposite of what the majority is doing, to think and act independently rather than blindly following the crowd. By taking a contrarian approach in areas like business, investing, or personal choices to stand out or achieve different results.

ZIG-ZAG: a line with abruptly alternating angles

to zig: to act in an opposing or different way than the social majority

to zag: to follow the actions and norms of the social majority

A common application is the contrarian investment strategy of buying when others are fearful (selling) and selling when others are greedy (buying). It means avoiding buying at a market peak and selling at a market bottom.

Companies can use this strategy to find a niche or unique approach. For example, a business might focus on a different model or customer base than its competitors to achieve success.

It can also apply to personal growth, where one chooses a path that is not the most popular but is more aligned with their individual goals or values.
