Early Fall ( a case study on things lost in translation)

幾天前我寫了一首中文詩，可以作為一個很好的例子來說明有些東西是無法翻譯的，或者說在翻譯中必然會丟失的。它是下麵這首七律。

 

【七律】初秋

 

四季輪回何日休，秋來心上使人愁。

黃衣孤樹共田野，白鷺秋風升日頭。

獨苦方知茶裏化，清歡還到月中遊。

欲忘自我抬目望，雲彩飄揚星漢流。

 

它的譯文如下。

 

Early Fall

 

When will the cycle of the four seasons end?

As the Fall falls into my heart I feel melancholy.

 

A lone tree with yellow clothes shares the field

with a white egret, the autumn wind, and the rising sun.

 

Bitter loneliness is melt into my tea.

A visit to the moon gives me moonlight-clear joy.

 

How can I forget myself? look up!

The clouds are floating, the Milky Way is flowing.

 

乍一看，意思都譯出來了。但是再仔細讀讀中文詩的第二、三、四、七句，有沒有什麽東西丟失了？

 

這幾句中有隻存在於中文裏的文字遊戲，word play，無法譯到英文裏。

 

第二句，秋字在心字上，組成愁字。

 

第三句，黃字可以拆成共和田兩個字。

 

第四句，白字是日字頭上加一撇，指太陽初升。

 

第七句，自字是目字頭上加一撇，類似於白字，可以指抬目（升目）。

 

這些隻是一種類型的例子，說明在一種語言中獨一無二的東西是沒法翻譯到另一種語言裏的。在莎劇中可以找到很多word play的例子，unique to English, 沒法譯到中文裏來。
