電影CRIMSON TIDE裏鐵血的一個片段
In movie Crimson Tide, there was such an blooding boiling clip. The background is like this: there is a military conflict between states of former Soviet Union. One of them threatened to use nuclear weapons. It is tense moment and American government is concerned. As result, Pentagon sends one of their unclears submarines to monitor the situation.
Before departure, the captain of USA submarine walks towards the podium.
"Little ducks. There's trouble in Russia, so they called us". Gene hackman used one sentence to describe the complicated situation. It shows the attitude of captain: there is a job we need to do. Nothing more and nothing less.
"We constitute the frontline and the last line of defense“. It precisely describes the capability of nuclear submarine: it can launch the preempt strike and it can also counter attack for the purpose of retaliation. It is so intimidating. The fate of country is literally in your hand. It is so contrary to the first line of "Little ducks. There is troble in Russia".
"I expect and demand your very best. Anything less, you should join the air force". The captain cracks a joke at this critical and tense moment. It lets the sailors relaxed a little bit. It also creates a pause before another round of more exciting and more inspirational climax. By the way, USAF is not your ordinary secondary class military force anywhere in the world. There is rivary between US navy and USAF. The captain used unique way to show its competitive nature.
"This maybe our commander in chief's navy. But this is my boat". What a macho and over the top confidence he showed in this line. The captain uses such a simple but powerful message to describe top of the line USA nuclear powered submarine: it is merely a boat and it is mine. On this thing, I am in total control. I am in control of fire power more than the fire power ever released in the history of the war. He is a bad a$$. I do think it earns the tremendous respect of all sailors.
"All I want is you keep up with me. If you can't, the strange sensation you feeling in your seat of your pants is my boot in you a$$". It sounds very funny. it sounds like light hearted joke. But later in the movie, you will see how ruthless he is and how tough he is. He is NOT your loving and caring parent. He is a no nonsense and iron fist kind of guy.
This motivational speech ends up with the calls and replies between the captain and his deputy. Whatever the captain calls, the deputy replies and ends up with "sir". It magnifies the power of military and the chain of command. It represent the awesome power of mass killing machine and unshakable in-your-face attitude.
"What is the name of the boat?"
"Alabama, Sir"
"What we say?"
Every sailor roars" Go, Bama! Roll tide!"
At this moment, I am 100% pumped up. My eyes turn red and I am ready to kill.
I wish you enjoy that movie.
