Meaning:

However high something rises, eventually it has to come back down.

Background:

This expression is sometimes used in a literal way, but is usually used

metaphorically to describe, among other things, power and prices.

A cliche in investing, it rings true on many scales but is hard to act on. For

example, we know bond rates have reached unseen levels since the Great

Recession. They have to come down, but when? They are no where near historical

records yet and can go higher as the Fed has to appear tough on inflation which,

despite what statisticians say, hasn't seemed to abate. How many would commit to

5%, watch the dollar crumble and bond prices plummet year after year, and hold

on to maturity? Bad timing would guarantee a lose-lose. The advice seems both

sound and useless.
