are more important than reading and writing in communications. Many foreigners in China speak fluent Chinese without knowing any Chinese characters. But that does not affect their daily communication with the locals. It is hard to get a nice learning environment in North America because native speakers are used to immigrants and care less about their language skills. But at least we can improve our listening skill with a steady diet or a immersion of English movies, TV, podcasts etc.
