I walked out of the optician’ office with my eight-year-old son, Jason, who was licking a small lollypop greedily, and in one of intervals of his sloshing, announced grimly, “I like going to the eye doctor’s office.”

“That is a surprise.” I raised my eyebrow, “I thought you hated to come here.”

“Each time I come here, the eye doctor gives me a lollypop. And I like to go to dentist’s office too.”

“Why is that? Remember the last time I was trying to drag you into the dentist’s office?”

“But he let me watch the Pokémon when he was fixing my teeth.”

“You’ve watched too much TV and that is why we are in the eye doctor’s office.”

“Dad, can I ask you a question?”

“Sure, go ahead.”

“Why the eye doctor gives me lollipops? Doesn’t he worry about my teeth? And why the dentist lets me watch TV? Doesn’t he worry about my eyes?”

“That is because…eh.... Because…” I started struggling for an answer, then I gave it up, and said resignedly, “son, welcome to the adults' world!”
