Three sounds in the past

The past tense ending of regular verbs is pronounced in three ways: [t], [d] and [id]

1.      Use the pronunciation [id] after a regular verb if the basic form ends in /d /or /t/:

[id] in :  needed /niydid/; guided /gaydid/; hated /heytid/; lifted /lifted/; dusted /d sted/

2.      Use the pronunciation [d] when the basic form of the verb ends in a vowel or any voiced consonant except /d/:

/d/ in : Skied /skiyd/; sighed /sayd/; weighed /weyd/; rubbed //r bd//; begged / b gd//; loved; bathed; raised; charged, assumed; dined; banged; called; poured;

3.      Use the pronunciation [t] when the basic form of the verb ends in any voiceless consonant except /t/:

/t/ in : sliped /slipt/; liked /laikt/; laughed /la:ft/; guessed //gest/; wished /wi∫t/; reached /ri:t∫t/

Practice: read and pay attention to the pronunciation of the past tense form of verbs in brackets

The other day we went shopping. After we (arrive) at the mall, I (hunt) for some running shoes, and my friend (try) to find a cheap pair of jeans. I (wait) for him for a while, and he finally (show) up. I thought we were done, but then I (check) my shopping list, and found that I (need) to get a few more things. After that, we want to have lunch, so we (decide) go to a nice restaurant. We were in hurry, so we just (order) the special. It (taste) very good. We (finish) our meal, (pay) for it, and then (hurry) out to catch the bus to the park. But it (look) like rain, so we (change) our plans and went back to our apartments. Our shipping trip (turn) out all right. We (manage) to find everything we were looking for.
