There is at least one more kind of competetion.

 

This is common among runners: one comes to compete against oneself not others.

In many running events, there are hundreds or thousands of runners, and only a few  top runners are rewarded.  Most of the people participate in the race not to compete against others but to defeat themselves of yesterday.
