用一氧化碳報警器,檢測天然氣泄漏,是認知誤區。
a
standard
carbon
monoxide
detector
cannot
reliably
detect
natural
gas;
specialized
sensors
are
required
for
methane
or
other
combustible
gases.
Why
CO
Detectors
Cannot
Detect
Natural
Gas
Carbon
monoxide
detectors
are
specifically
designed
to
sense
CO
molecules
,
which
are
colorless,
odorless,
and
toxic
gases
produced
by
incomplete
combustion
of
fuels
like
natural
gas,
propane,
or
wood.
The
sensors
in
CO
detectors—such
as
electrochemical,
semiconductor,
or
biomimetic
types—are
chemically
tuned
to
react
only
to
carbon
monoxide.
They
measure
CO
concentrations
relevant
to
human
health
and
trigger
alarms
based
on
exposure
levels.
Methane,
the
primary
component
of
natural
gas,
has
a
different
chemical
structure
and
does
not
trigger
these
sensors.

How
Natural
Gas
Detection
Works
Natural
gas
is
highly
flammable
and
naturally
odorless,
so
utilities
add
a
chemical
called
mercaptan
to
give
it
a
distinctive
“rotten
egg”
smell
for
safety.
Detecting
natural
gas
requires
combustible
gas
detectors
,
which
use
technologies
such
as
catalytic
bead
sensors,
infrared
absorption,
or
heat-sensitive
sensors
to
measure
flammable
gas
concentrations
relative
to
the
Lower
Explosive
Limit
(LEL)
.
These
devices
are
designed
to
alert
occupants
to
potential
fire
or
explosion
hazards,
not
CO
poisoning.
