A diamond IR lens can refer to a lens made using a diamond-turning manufacturing process or a lens made from diamond material itself, though the former is much more common. Diamond-turning is a high-precision method for creating infrared (IR) lenses on a variety of materials like germanium, silicon, and zinc selenide, used in applications from thermal imaging to industrial inspection. Lenses made from actual diamond are used in specialized applications like X-ray optics due to diamond's extreme hardness and radiation resistance.

Diamond-turned IR lenses
  • Manufacturing process:
A single-point diamond tool is used to "cut" or turn the surface of a substrate material, creating precision optical shapes like aspheres, cylinders, and spheres.

  • Materials:
This process is applied to a wide range of IR-transmitting materials, including germanium (Ge), silicon (Si), zinc selenide (ZnSe), and others.

  • Applications:
Commonly used in high-performance optics for defense, aerospace, medical, and industrial applications where precision is critical.

  • Benefits:
Allows for the creation of complex, custom lens designs to improve imaging performance and reduce the number of components in a system.
