“The fact you’re allowed to stay alive” shows China’s inclusiveness, Chinese official tells Hong Kong pro-democracy lawmakers

Zhang Xiaoming, the head of the China Liaison Office in Hong Kong and the city’s most senior Chinese official, met with several local lawmakers on the issue of universal suffrage on Aug. 19.
After pro-democracy LegCo member Leung Yiu-chung asked Zhang whether Beijing would allow a democrat candidate to become chief executive, Zhang reportedly answered that “the fact that you are allowed to stay alive, already shows the country's inclusiveness”, according to Reuters.
Reuters says the quote is confirmed by two people in the room, and that Zhang’s office has not responded to requests for comment.
Zhang further said that the chief executive must be a “patriot”, and told the lawmakers that Beijing had been generous when they allowed pro-democracy candidates like Leung run for seats in LegCo.
"We were shocked, said someone who was at the meeting. "But Zhang Xiaoming is only an agent who delivered the stance of the central government without trying to polish it."
However, some Twitter users are questioning Reuters’ translation of Zhang’s quote about the lawmakers “staying alive”. According to Sing Tao Daily, the exact Chinese quote is “仍能安然坐在這兒，反映我們的寬大”, which Hong Kong journalist Yuen Chan translates as “that [you] can sit here peacefully reflects our inclusiveness/leniency”.
Others, however, believe this to be too literal of a translation. Whichever way, the message is clear. Zhang thinks Hong Kong is lucky to have even gotten this far in their fight for democracy.
